«« AH! Please help! Auto tranny will NOT reverse! :p »»
The rundown: My gf's auto trans 91 civic has been having occasional tranny issues...for example...only when the car has just been started and driven; 1st, then the shift to 2nd and it will hold 2nd until u floor it or get up in rpms (waay up) and then make a spitting metallic sound when it finally shifts up to 3rd (yikes!
) I believe it goes w/out saying that the shifts are not butter smooth here...I should also mention it'll do the same from time to time when you flat out floor it. (very rarely)
Functional still, though, so liveable. After a while of this an additional issue surfaces; reverse is starting to make funny stubborn noises when being selected. I watched as she shifted into reverse and heard a heavy 'CLUNK' and watched the whole engine/tranny in the bay just rock as it clunked into gear. Went for some take out tonight and had to push the car out of it's space fred flinstone style as reverse was entirely non-responsive...revved like neutral.
Shouldn't be the tranny fluid, as that was changed w/in the past six months and doesn't appear to be leaking, although i've yet to have a chance to check...
Please reply as promptly as possible...we've been thru a rough patch here in FL, and it looks to only get rougher (Goodbye Charley, Helooo Frances
) so needless to say a shitted out tranny in one of our main modes of transpo. is a bad thing right now! We're still trying to clean up & rebuild from the last one and now hafta get ready for another, more intense, more slow-moving storm! C'est la vie!
But before i veer entirely OT...
Much TIA for any and all replies...i'll check this thread as often as i am able, may be out of power for who knows who long...they're saying longer than last time (and that was a week
)

Near daytona...
Hope it's not the same scenario here as it was w/your trans! How long between reverse going out and the rest of the tranny seizing?
Anyone, everyone, feel free to chime in...
Thanx.

OK! Was able to get to a PC w/internet connection! Still no power tho
Anybody else? Should we just start looking for a new (cheap!) car?
How much would it run to replace the engine and/or trans in a 91 auto?
TIA,

Anybody else? I managed a solution for the time being, but this band-aid won't last forever!
Could it be some kinda mount issue (trans or engine) ? The engine definitely doesn't seem like it should buck & rock like that going into gear
Perhaps a minor fix that would be more manageable finacially than a new engine & trans or, at worst, *gasp* buy another car?
Any experience or ideas would be graciously welcomed...i feel the pressure upon me of the hourglass sands, and they're falling faster...
Thanks to H-T, and yes, LAMA, hurricanes do indeed BLOW...

my bad didn't see your reply, i didn't have reverse for about a year because when u first start the car when it is cold it will go into reverse. when it got warm the only way it would going to it i have to put it in 2 gear. i have a tranny from a 91 crx that i was going to put in but i did the auto to manual swap.
