Default How good are Ground Control Coilovers???

I have really been considering the Ground Control coilover, but lately I have been reading posts about how this type of sleeved coilovers are not that great, and how some people are afraid of the sleeve slipping or something like that, and talking about how the damping rates would be difficult to tune to that of your shocks, but this would not be a problem on a true coilover system.

Are the things I have been hearing true? Are Ground Controls good for an entry level suspension paired with Koni Yellows for a daily driver and weekend Autocrosser. I know that the type R has spring rates of like 243f/243r or something, and I was thinking that rates like 350f/400r would be good for me, or would that be too stiff for the streets?

Let me know what you guys think about the questions above?

Thanks,
Jon

i am running ground controls now and i like them alot, they are definatly worth the money, if you dont want to spend a couple thousand for some real coilover, such as tein, apex, jic. If you put konis with ground controls it will handle very nice i know alot of people with that combo, and they are happy with it.

I have ground controls mixed with some KYB shocks, and it feels good. It's nothing compared to the tein coilovers, but for the price it's good. Easy adjustability is also a plus.

What spring rates does everyone have, and how do you like the handling/ride. I was thinking about getting 300f/350r, or 350f/400r, what kind of handling ride would those combo's give me.

Thanks in Advance,
Jon

I run them and I absolutely love the things with my Koni Yellows.
They're not bouncy, and still stiff - but dont kill my back.

I also have 17" wheels with a 205/40/17 tire, so that worsens the ride even more.

Anyone wanna trade my Subzero's for some Circut 8's in Bronze - in 16's?!?

Even though I don't have them I like them because you can select the rates that suit your driving needs and they use Eibach springs, a highly reputable spring specialist.

350-400 might be a little bone jarring for a daily driver but i suppose if you don't have a lot of bumpy street you'd be ok

Jeff: I run 450/600. It's not that bad.

I love my Ground-Control coilovers. The ride is awsome, even with my stock struts and 17's. I can't wait to see how they ride after I install my KYB AGXes!!!! My friend had skunk 2's, they ride so much ruffer than ground-control!!!

I've heard some mixed reviews on Ground Control. I guess it all depends on what kind of car it's for.

No, the problem is when people don't know how to adjust their shocks to match the spring rates.. or slam the bitch to the ground...

Yes they are good better than stock 4x4 springs.
But dont think the ride will ever be the same-- even on soft settings on shocks.
Then if u get a stiifer spring set - then make sure u dont have a long daily commute cause it does get annoying to drive when u feel EVERY rock EVERY groove in the road--- I also had my car corner balanced so the gc and balanced the car is very predictable and u can anticipate the cars movements.

What's the softest spring rate available?

I have the GCs: 380F, 450R with Illuminas, stock 15s, and a TypeR rear sway bar. I am forced to set the Illuminas to their maximum stiffness because otherwise the high spring rates will not be sufficiently damped. Ride quality is definitely harsh, and you gotta watch the tail if it's raining (in part because of the sway bar, I'm sure). However, damn that bitch handles great on the autocross, and absolutely nobody can keep up in twisties. It's a classic tradeoff.

On a realated topic, I would not recommend Illuminas with this setup. I'd go with Koni Yellows instead, as I believe you have mentioned. When you stiffen Illuminas, both compression and rebound are stiffened. Konis will hold compression relatively soft while the rebound is stiffened. This is a much better setup, especially with an open diff already making it difficult to put power to the ground. Plus, ride quality is much better with softer compression.
