Default EK Civic DX trans in Civic EX of same year (99-00) - worthwhile?

I will be getting my car soon, as many of you know, and I'm seriously considering a silver 99-00 EX.

Now, the EX has taller gear ratios than a Civic DX. Now, if I swapped the DX tranny in (selling the EX trans for a similar price of the DX trans) then I would have closer ratios keeping my little SOHC VTEC in the powerband.

Good or bad idea?

Don't worry, a swap would be definetly there - but with limited funds....

Ummm...the Ex has a larger final drive gear then the Dx. You would be worse off installing a Dx tranny.

depends.. if you want better gas mileage and higher top speed....
if you do... then do it..
1st 4th and 5th gears are the same ratios.. but the diff is different..

I put the Hatchback tranny in my coupe which is even more severe...

1st and 2nd gear suck.. they are pretty tall..

I did this because I found that I needed a 1st and a half gear...
1st would be too short.. and 2nd would drop my rpms tooo low
Now I can stay in 1st longer or leave it in 2nd
also I can stay in my power band in 3rd and into 4th now on the freeway...
and I can do 105 in 3rd, shift and still be in vtec going into 4th
I also dropped a few hundred RPMs at 80 in 5th

*****************
I wouldn't do it again
it's a comprimise
But I'm not entirely unhappy
because it's my daily driver
you just have to weigh the good and bad
or just make custom tranny

You got it all backwards.
The EX tranny has the better gearing.
DX gearing just plain SUCKS!

BTW Define "taller gear ratios"
