Default Auto - Manual, needs your opinion.

i got an 02 accord coupe 4cyl with auto tranny, i've been wanting a manual transmission pretty much after 1 year of ownership but recently the urge just got very very strong. i have thought about trading my accord out for a RSX but the idea didn't seem very realistic because firstly it would be very hard to find the correct car with the correct owner with a correct will and everything, being a student, there just isn't a whole bunch of cash to go around to sell my accord and buy another car. again, it's just near impossible to do otherwise it's an attractive option.

but anywayz, the second option that i came up with is to swap out my auto tranny for a 5spd tranny, my question is has anybody done it? or have you seen/helped friends do it? how hard is it? i've heard that it's really not a smart move but i need your opinions. and lastly how much would it cost to actually do a tranny swap? much much thanks in advance.

im a student too.....so i understand the cash part.....consider a third option...if u dont have the money to get a new car...then u probably dont want to do either of them.....not saying the tranny swap will cost a much as a new car cuz it wont even be close...but im just saying be happy with what u are driving and look at ur options again later when u have more money to spare....

i agree

i've done an auto to manual conversion on my car, and it was not worth it IMO. But, if you are doing a engine swap at the same time, it makes it more worth it. but i still wouldnt do it.

tranny(between $1k to $1500)
clutch, flywheel, pressure plate($300-$400)
passenger side axle($60-$100)
intermediate shaft($150)
mounts($100)
bracket($80)
clutch pedal($80)
brake pedal($80)
clutch master cylinder($120)
slave cylinder($80)
all the lines($100)
shifter assembly($70)
shifter cables($130)
labor($500-600)

this is why i say its not worth it, you are going to spend betwee $2,000(if you got the hook up and do it yourself) to $3,000-$3,500 if you dont do it your self. so, sell your car and get a standard, then sink your extra money into it.

or you can do what it did, buy a whole prelude front clip. i paid $2700(jdm h22). that way you have most of the parts you need to do the conversion. minus the axel, intermediate shaft, and pedals(need to be accord).

i did mine along with a engine swap so i saved a little. would i do it again? hell no, i would have sold my car for $5k, and took the extra $5k i had to do the swap and bought a prelude for $5k and sunk the extra $5k in aftermarket parts.

These prices must be for new parts. Why not buy good condition used parts for much less?

that might be the best idea...when I did my swap, since the H22 came w/ the manual tranny, I went to a salvage yard and found a manual 96 Accord EX. I took everything; the shifter assemly, pedals, master cylinder, firewall clutch fluid lines, and clutch dampener. All for 250 bucks. Then my buddy and I did everything in 1 weekend. If you have all the parts and the knowledge...its worth it.

I've never done an auto-manual swap but I have removed everything from my totalled Accord and it seems like it would be straight forward just a lot of labor since the motor would probably need to be out to gain access to all the lines on the firewall and that.
