Anyone had any experience with both the 1st and 2nd gen transmissions, I'm trying to find out if the parts are interchangeable without having to do all the work myself.

parts are not interchangeable - on the 1st gen, all of the gears, except 5th, on the input shaft are made as part of the shaft and are not removeable, same as 1st and 2nd on 2nd gen - gears on the countershaft are removeable - the shafts and gears are much smaller on the 1st gen - the shifting mechanism is completely different - the differential is completely different - haven't checked to see if any of the bearings are interchangeable, but i doubt it

 

Sounds like my idea of changing out the FD of a 1st gen to a 2nd gen went out the window.
