I guess the way my dad told me for my ride was
1.find dents if any
2.remove what is not going to be paint or mask if u lazy or can't get it off
3.sand with 400 grade wet sand paper not dry
4.then clean up the mess u did

well i do model cars sometimes... a few years ago i was doing one and the spray can had a weird nozel on it.. i thought i had it the right way but i didnt... it wasnt to cool... it was black car paint... i think it might have been high temp or anti rust...
i washed it out and i see ok now...

to get the paint off easy down to the metal you should use some aircraft remover, put it on and wait like 15 mins and scrape it off works great
