Default Noisy valve lash after valve job.

I just did my first valve adj. on my 89 Civic hatch.
It would really clatteror ping once it was warm, at op temp, but befroe the car was warm it is quiet as a mouse.
Anyways, I figured it was in need of a vlave adj. so I started in .
I have done many a VW Bug valve adj. and this didnt seem any different.
I did the In. @ .020
I did the Ex @ .025
This is according to the sticker under the hood.
Some of them were way tight when i 1st measured them (before adj.)and some were loose.
Anyways now the vlaves are noisy all the time and I have yet to test the car on the road to see if the ping/clatter comes back.
Ill keep ya posted .
Oh yeah , this car burns quite a bit of oil , about 1 quart for evey tank of gas .
And I only see signs of oil on 1 of the spark plugs #4.
Only smokes when it sits @ idle for long periods of time and then you rev it , when you let of the throttle it then kicks alittle grey smoke.
thanx

You did set Each Cylynder at TDC befor you adjusted them Right?

I have a feeling you just pulled the Cover off and went to town. If thats the case Dont start the motor any more. You need to Readjust them befor You Brake a Rocker arm Or bend a Valve.

I started at the #1 plug set it to TDC in compression stroke.
then did , #3 , then #4, and finally #2 all set at compression stroke.
I know it was @ compression stroke as I put a small long screw driver (very gently ) in the spark plug hole and rotate the crank counter clockwise until the screwdriver is as far up as it will go , just before it starts to fall back down.
So I didnt just pop the cover and go to town.
Also what should the gap be set at on the spark plugs , Bosch platinums?
Thanx

Yup , thats what I did.
I think Im out of time .
Im gonna check that tonight .
If thats gets me alittle better then Ill add sum super thru and see if that cleans it up?
The pinging/rattling I usually get will accelerating in any gear seems to have lessened alittle since the valve job, just sounds alittle ,I dunno , knocky , its weird.

did you double chk for valve movement in each cylinder when you had it at compression and TDC, i've kicked myself a couple times when i didn't do it and you find out you were on the wrong stroke later on... Stuipd mistake but it happens.

Just to clarify, when you did the screwdriver-in-spark-plug-hole thing, you're sure it was TDC on the compression stroke, right? I only ask because the screwdriver will tell you TDC on the exhaust stroke too, and both the IN and EX valves will be open very slightly at valve overlap. Also, did you put the feeler gauge between the cam and rocker, or between the rocker tip and valve? It should be checked between the rocker tip and valve, but if you checked it between the cam lobe and rocker then the rocker arm ratio will multiply the gap out at the rocker arm tip. My manual also lists the correct valve lash for all 84-95 Civic/CRX d-series as .007"-.009" In. and .009"-.011" Ex. and the engine must be cold, not warm.

Well I know how to do a valve job just never did one on a honda before.
I know I set the measurments right for a stock 16V SOHC 89 4spd manual civic hatch , since I got the measurments on the sticker from under the hood.
I guess Ill start looking at timing and ignition.
Then move on to the oil burning issue as it performs perfect.
