Default Heat Shield over Cat .... is it required?

The top of my heat shield on my cat converter is rusted out.

The bottom is still fine, but the top is wide open, the sides are ok where it bots together.. I'll have pics later ...

I'm wondering if therse a purpose to this, I have a carsound high flow universal cat that I want to get put in (with my H22 swap in progress) .. so I'm wondering if the external shield is needed...

I got rid of mine. It was so rusted and rattling so much...
The only purpose is maybe to keep heat of the cat to make it working ASAP.

What was that last sentence?

Anyways, the heat sheild is just that, a heat sheild, nothing more. It prevents the heat from your CAT/exhaust from heating up the underside of the car, preventing the heat from transferring into your car, where there are things that don't like heat, like plastic and carpet. If your running without it, feel the floor where the sheild would be protecting, if it's hot, I'd take a close look at what you could put on there that would not rattle.

keep the heat shield if possible, can be dangeriuos, expecialy since its right under your carpet and insulation.. I did a rollcage on a pervious car and that insulation is highly flamable... fire = bad. control the heat if you can.
