ok, earlier today, i was driving home, and then started to smelling this really bad burning smell from my engine...so when i got to my friends house, and checked my oil, i was 1 quart less...so i decided to add more oil in, so when i opened the oil cap, there was smoke comming from inside the head...this has never happend to me before, it was pretty cold today. even on hot days, when i open my oil cap, smoke doesn't come out...so i added oil and drove it...i didn't smell it anymore, but when i popped my hood again and opened the oil cap, smoke started comming out again...is this normal??

 

Well most of the time, when my engine is up at normal operating temperature, this happens also. Not a lot of smoke, just a little bit. It's fine. Just hot oil circulating and not really going anywhere.

 

I get a little smoke out of my oil cap. I also get a lil smoke when pulling out my dipstick. Hot oil is going to smoke, especially when its cooler outside.

 

Or when you're doing 75mph on a 100* afternoon for 140 miles.

 

That happens to me sometimes too.. but no bad burning smell from the engine tho.

 

It's Normal

 

If it's excessive, it could be a bad PCV valve-- pull it out and shake it. If it clicks, it's still good and working, if it doesn't, it needs to be replaced. This could also be bad rings/cracked ring lands-- in this case, you're getting blow by and it's coming out there.

 

i dont know about the smell, but this has always happened with me after i have driven the car for a while. on both of my engines

 

the smell is like a really strong burnt rubber scent...it freakin stinks...and it just started smelling like that today

 

Its normal for when you been driving your car and u open the cap for smoke to come out is kinda like common sence OIL REALLY HOT when u open and iis colder outside which is going to be a lil smoke is going to come out

 

does that really strong burning rubber smell has anything to do with it though? cuz it was a strong scent, but i'm afraid it might be something else burning
