Dry ice for the tar and remove the wires however you want, you can do it clean or sloppy you make the call.

thanks, is there anything else you'd recommend getting rid of to make the car lighter?

The driver!

Mix the dry ice with some commercial (you can buy in gallons and stuff) rubbing alcohol. The alcohol won't freeze, but will get just as cold as the dry ice. Stir that stuff up into a slurry and carefully (don't splash that stuff on you) pour it onto the sound deadening tar stuff. It will get into the pits and valleys of the tar and freeze it really well. Chip it of with a hammer and a chisel and you're good to go.

I would remove EVERYTHING from the car icluding the dash. Remove all the harnesses and open them up. Get a Helm manual and just trace the wires you REALLY NEED and wire them up and toss the rest.
