i donno but at work in the summer if your gloves get sweaty, and you touch the cone on the mig wip you can get a shock... or if you touch the steel your welding on... it doesn't hurt just you can feel it
hey i got zapped a little on dc mode, it didnt hurt just tingeld a bite, but i have yet to get it on the ac setting i heard that hurts more
I've been zapped quite a few times. I was in the bad habit of resting my bare arms on my metal table and while welding with no gloves on, touching my rod to my arc ZAP
knocked me off the stool a couple times

I was watching that "American Hot Rod" show and one of the guys was welding the "Aluma-tup" chassis. He kept getting zapped, it was pretty funny

Lots of times.......it is not a big deal. Passing through the joints (knees and elbows) leaves that TIG ache behind.
***I have yet to get flashed when TIG welding, and do use proper attire when welding. FYI you can still get zapped through your clothes, it depends on the situation.***

Thats why they invented leathers and gloves.....I hope you guys don't weld with t shirts and shorts on? If so I hope you have fun when you get skin cancer from the light given off while welding.
So how many of you have had arc flash? Or a good welding sunburn?

In my welding class we saw a video of a guy who had been welding for years without wearing a jacket and had cancers all over his arms. It was really ******* gross to see. I always wear my helmet, jacket, and gloves when I'm welding.
Skin cancer and blindness = thE SuXor

I've welded in short sleeves and welder's gloves before. Cool burn on the front of my arm from mid-forearm to mid bicep. Retard. Never again. I just wear the arm and shoulder leathers w/ apron.
I've gotten flashburn too. Little tiny blisters all over the surface of your eye really sucks. Feels like you staring into a sandstorm for a couple days.

dude I am the king of welder's burns. I got this baby from maybe 2 minutes of mig welding a pipe, and you can clearly see where the sleeve ended and the gloves went up to. I still have faint tan lines after it all healed, which took a good 3 weeks. the skin peeling off was so thick, it was like leather
this burn was on both arms, not just on the left as in the pic. so that makes it even worse. But I've never been zapped though, just if I leave high frequency on and am doing stick, I'll get a little jolt, like licking the terminals of a 9 volt battery. nothing to complain about though.

This is why I made the $70 investment in a welding jacket. White light is not good for any part of the human body.

main cause ive seen around here. most people ground the metal, but put their hands inbetween the welds and the ground. the ground is gonna go through u first, shorts possible path to ground.
i learned, the hard way of corse

Man am I glad I read this thread before welding on my own! I had no idea you could get skin cancer from welding!
Someone might want to write in to Monster Garage and tell those guys that. Almost everybody that is on that show welds in a t-shirt.

seems like u guys are really sensitive to UV. i don't weld all the time, but i usually just wear a short sleeve shirt and welding gloves w/ my helmet. i've never been UV burned or anything of that sort. but i guess since there is the possibilty of getting sick over something stupid and careless, ill start protecting myself more.
anyone wanna post up welding/ turbo scars ? i got ****** plenty, starting to wear long sleeve all the time now, sick of scars. its so bad that my girlfrineds friends asked me at dinner if i was suicidal.
yeah thats why I went to tig welding. Less burns. I've got burns from mig welding vertically all night, every night and it burnt through my sleeves. I tend to weld in a t-shirt if its hot. I may get burnt occasionally, but its got within two days. I've left scars from the tig due to touching my arm with the rod. I did drop the ball off the end of an aluminum rod when I used the same hand the rod was in to lift my hood. The rod had a ball on the end that was still soft and it went down the back of my shirt.. 6 burns from that all the way to my lower back. sucked.
i tig in just a heavy cotton shirt long sleve shirt and gloves.
if i saw any redness / evidence of UV burns i'd start wearing thicker stuff.. but man i dont even get red at all when i DO weld in a t shirt (not often)
i wear it more for hot objects then the UV... scars aren't cool. after i burned my face one day with a filler rod i started weraing safety glasses under my helmet too.
^ in case your wondering... i was welding a SS downpipe... finished a bead, dropped the filler and flipped up my helmet all at once, to answer a kids question... the filler rod hit the 3" downpipe, spun around and smacked me right under the eye with the hot portion... ****** took 2 weeks to heal.
now i do everything very slowly and carefully... i do this to make my own hobby affordable and make some money on the side while i'm in college... and i intend to finish working as a part time fabricator no worse for wear.

yeah, the worst I ever felt was alittle tingle like a 9v battery on the tongue. However, I did sit on a plasma torch (w/o a saftey trigger) as I was caging my car, grounded myself to the car, and it blew a hole in the back of my leg, jsut under my ***. it didnt look bad at first but the next day it was a 4 inch blister, and hurt like a son of a bitch. so...no sitting on plasma torches
