Default Help Me Remove this header bolt!

I find the one bolt out of 9 on the part where the headers connect to the head to be VERY hard to remove. Its the one on the bottom right on the head. I tried to remove the valve cover grounder to give me more space but its not enough! There is a bolt that if I remove will give me enough space, but the bolt is tight as hell! Any help will be nice.

Heres my advice. Spray it with some PB blaster or something like that and let it sit a while. Come back, and put two wrenches to work. One wrench to actually hold the bolt, and a second to use as a lenghtener on the end of the first.

Okay, this is a good torque multiplying trick.

Take the first wrench. It has two ends, a closed end and an open end.

O=====C

Take the second wrench, it looks the same.

O=====C

Now take the first wrench and put it on the bolt your having trouble with. Then hook the other wrench on the end of it, effictely making a longer lever for you to push on. It should fit together like this.

O=====C/O=====C Tough to explain on the computer, but just try putting some wrenches together until you figure out how to use them as one long lever like Im talking about. This is all if you can't fit a conventional breaker bar in there.

its a common technique....

you spray the bolt like he said... with some kind of blasting compound, even wd40 would help if you dont have PB blaster...

let it sit and eat away at it for a while (try not to get it on much else except the bolt you plan on removing, its not good for metals)

come back and put one wrench on the bolt, then take another wrench and hook it onto the first wrench... i wish i had a picture so you could see how to do it...

IM not using wrenches.

Then wahts the issue? Throw a breaker bar on it after you lube it up and break it loose?

well you need a breaker bar or something that will give you more leverage than the tools that came in that case

A breaker bar is like 12 bucks at Harbor Friehgt. Well worth the investment. If you cant get it loose with just the breaker bar, put a pipe over the end for more leverage.

Just buy a different ratchet with a longer handle, and your problem should be solved. torque=(force)(distance) so you either need to apply more force or make the length of the ratchet handle--distance--longer. Or do both if you can. I've seen some at Sears that are HUMONGOUS in length. They weren't that expensive, either. Sometimes you're forced to buy a specific tool just to finish a job.

I wouldn't even recommend a ratched for breaking a stubborn bolt loose. You can damage the ratcheting mechanism inside them or even completely destroy them first thing if your beasty enough.

cant afford a breaker bar? use a metal pipe to slide over the ratchet handle. Don't got one? use two wrenches like RIcey suggested earlier.

Why would I need a long rachet handle? Its that bolt by the rachet handle in the first picture thats getting in the way.

by now you could of gone and gotten a piece of pipe slipped it over the ratchet and had that header off. Get off the computer and get to work, people have allready answered your question, with more than 1 solution!

You don't have to worry about breaking the gear inside the ratchet. I rebuild them at Sears. Snap ring pliers and a new rebuild kit ($2) it's as good as new. But, I know the damage that can be done to a ratchet to break bolts loose.

One guy brought a 1/2" Drive Carftsman to the store. Took me aside and told me what he was using it for. He was using it to break cylinder heads loose. One bolt was too stubborn and ended up GRENADING the gear inside the ratchet. Took it apart and I counted close to 84 pieces inside there where there was only supposed to be 4.

Use a breaker bar or get a pipe and use it as an extension.

haha, thats aweseome Dimi. I had a friend helping me get an axle nut off and he broke a 1/2 inch Harbor Frieght breaker bar though, so you can snap those things too.
