03 civic, D17A1 motor...what is an entry level swap to aquire vtec?
I have a friend who owns an 03 civic, he wants vtec, but doesn't want to go crazy on a k swap...so what are his best options?
Yea, it wouldn't really be worth it to swap in a D17A2 just for 10 HP and VTEC. I would also recommend just getting a GReddy Turbo kit, that will be a lot more effective than swapping the engine. But he's not gonna really find a good engine for that generation except for the K20A2, but like I said, it costs a lot of money and can cause a lot of headaches. Get the turbo.

all Hondas now have a form of VTEC. Not saying it is the aggressive VTEC everyone knows of, but VTEC on those cars are for economy. And thus saying you want to acquire VTEC is dumb because technically, there is VTEC already.
its only on the HX(117hp)/EX/Si(canadian) 127hp.
LX/DX have the non-vtec model (115hp)!!!
best bet is custom turbo or get hasport mounts and go K-series

This is the same for 2001 and up. D17A1 is non- vtec, D17A2 is VTEC-E.
• 115-hp, 1.7-liter, 16-valve, SOHC 4-cylinder engine

• 127-hp VTEC® engine ..notice it says VTEC on the plug cover

sorry to bring thsi back from the dead, thought id rahter look this up first than post a new topic, but i have the same motor in a 4dr lx (02) and i was wondering if anyone had a list with possible motors around 150hp or more that could fit into this car, also looking to convert to manual.
if you don't wanna spend the money on a K series swap then your only other option is a EX head swap. It isn't worth it IMO on a sohc motor.
Besides, if you friend wants to swap just b/c he wants vtec, i suggest finding a new friend. Stay away from the ricers.

Somebody said K20? which one? i throught there was like K20A etc, or will any of them fit?
I live in Southern FL if sum1 could tell me roguly how much it would be for a k20 swap and manual cnversion, parts, labor, everything. Any estimates are appreciated, trying to work a budget, see if i'll take waht i got and have a friend help me turbo it.
Also, what should i do internally if i turbo the stock motor? Looking for around 150whp (no clue about PSI etc)

k20a = ITR motor
k20a2 = Type S motor
k20a3 = SI motor
To swap a type s motor, you are looking at around $6,000-$8,000 depending on how cheap you get a motor and the shop doing the install.
You can easily get 200whp from a stock D17 motor on a stock bottom end. There is one person on 7thgen that dyno'ed at over 250whp on a stock bottom end.
