d15b2 Engine Replacement How-to?????
I'm getting ready to replace my weenie d15b2 stock engine with one of those JDM replacements where you have to transfer your intake, alternator, distributor, etc and was wondering if there are any step-by-step how-to instructions on pulling it off. I've NEVER pulled an engine but feel confident I could do it with the right set of how-tos. Mine is a 1990 Civic LX 4 door sedan. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
I'm replacing it with another d15b2 that is the JDM (Japan type) motor. They only put carbs on them over there supposedly so you have to flip the injection system over to them.
It's not really that hard, but since its your first time, just plan for taking a LONG time. I replaced my d15b2 a few months after I got my car with another d15b2 just to get around. I was 16 at the time and I probably took like a week to do it. I just labeled all the hoses and wires as i disconnected them off the engine in the car, then found that spot on the new engine and labeled those plugs/etc.
I just used a piece of tape with a number on it.
I know that's not a step-by-step, but hopefully it'll help you out a bit. It's definitely not hard at all, just time consuming. It may get frustrating at times, but after you're finished, you'll feel like you learned and accomplished a lot. I knew where every plug, hose, and wire went on that engine by the time I finished.
Good luck, and
for wanting to do things on your own.

This is how I understand it:
He has a d15b2 in his car, and he bought a JDM d15b2 to replace it (but the JDM one he got is carb'd), so he wants to switch his IM and everything over to the new one so it'll drop right in. He doesnt have to convert to MPFI if he just swaps his original IM over to the new engine.

Yeap that's it exactly. The JDM engines only come carb'd. Single and dual. The intake manifold, alternator, distributor, etc stuff has to be flipped over to make it work. It is for my 15 year old as his first car. I was going to do a VTEC but figured due to money and power that maybe I ought to just put a fresh stock motor in it for now. I'm getting the engine for $550 shipped with a 6 month warranty.
Does that price include the transmision too? That seems a little steep.
I got my d15b2 for 200 bucks, and now I can't even sell it for 50
That's cool that you're doing that for your son though. My dad helped me put my first engine in too.
What exactly is wrong with the d15b2 thats in there right now?

Ok pick up a helms manual. http://www.helminc.com Best money I have ever spent. Like the other guy said start labeling stuff if it is your first swap then it will be really easy to put the new d15b2 in. I would suggest swapping all the parts from the old motor to the new one while they are both out of the car as it should be alot easier with more room to swap the parts. Otherwise just follow the manual and make sure you take your time. Air tools are nice but not neccessary. I did my b16a swap into my 4dr without any air tools.
Thanks for all the good ideas and suggestions guys! The $550 doesn't include the transmission and it all depends on what it came out of in Japan as to what components are on it plus they do not guarantee that they'll work since the Japan specs are different than the US models. Has anybody ever bought one of those JDM engines and swapped their components over with little hassle?

I know you can find them cheaper other places... but well worth it to me to spend a little extra for a complete swap.

Hmmmm. I sent them an email asking if they provide EVERYTHING needed to make the swap work. Has anyone ever used JDM and have a success or nightmare story to tell about them? I'm alittle concerned about them only providing a 30 day warranty. There is no way I could get it installed and running in less than that and if it blows up I'm screwed! Thanks for the insight dude!
here's the online helms for the crx. the process is going to be very similar to your car. fyi, the crx dx also has the same d15b2.

Dude! Thanks a million for the site! I'll print it all off and hopefully it'll keep me from totally screwing it up.
