Default Timing Belt Moves Side To Side....

I have never until today ran a motor without my timing belt being covered by a valve cover.

Well, today I installed a cut valve cover & I noticed my timing belt moved from side to side about 1mm while the motor was running.

I removed the skunk2 cam gears I just installed & installed OEM cam gears to see if that was the issue. It was not...

My timing belt tension is fine... I am guessing this is normal ?

The belt didnt look like it was in danger of sliding off, it just seems like my timing belt may not be 100% perfect.
There is no damage to the belt, it looks brand new..
It should considering its got under 10k on it.

Just wanted some additional input...

Has the crank pulley ever been off the car? I'm hinting at (2) washers that go on either side of the crank gear. One of yours may not be installed. It's just an idea as i'm not trying to point fingers.

It's a built ls-vtec motor :-)

I can double check to make sure I installed the washer properly.

I have never forgotten to, but that doesnt mean **** :-)

I just checked my manual to ensure I installed it properly...

Yes I did install the washer according to the manual...

I only see it list 1 washer... I have never seen 2 washers on a bseries motor.

I'm almost certain there are (2). Someone else chime in to confirm this.

2 washer, one on each side of the crank gear. same part number, and ou only remove one of them when you do t belt. so this might be the reason why they only list one.

I am pretty sure I used both.. I will have to pull everything apart to double check...

I am willing to bet in the race to get my car back on the road that I didnt install it thinking I had the newer style gear...

it's possible your motor is running lean, which can cause your timing belt to flap & jumping timing line on your crank pulley.

lol....

I removed my plastics & my crank pulley....
Both rings are there....

I am assuming I have a retarded timing belt...
It has been fine for over 6k (no problems).
The fact that it isnt "perfect" pisses me off.
But hey, what can you do except buy another belt & put it on

Btw, I even ran the car w/out plastics to see if my tensioner or waterpump was outa wack..

All I can guess is my belt isnt perfect.

My friend basically has the same set up as you and his belt does the exact same thing. I was wondering why it did that also. He has both washers installed too.

I am going to purchase another p72 belt today & install it to see what happens.

If it still does the same thing, Oh well, I will just leave it alone.

Did you tension the belt properly when you installed it?

I like to press on the tab of tensioner and hold it down while I tighten the tensioner bolt. It will crank the belt down very snug. Almost whines while the motor is running. A lot of the "only OEM" people will probably disagree with me- but I think that with rubber timing belts if it is not snugged down very tight it may not hold timing true at high rpms because of inertia induced stretch. I only use TODA timing belts or PE belts becasue of how I install them but they definately don't move side to side this way.

Take the advice/opinion for what it's worth. Everyone has different ideas.

I have never tried any kind of aftermarket timing belt.

OEM belts have never served me wrong until now.

The belt functioned fine, it just wasnt perfect.

I guess every company has its flaws, even oem parts...
