Default Functional spoliers.. Reccomendations?

With all this talk about the Mugen wing over the last couple days, thought this would be something good to ask about..

Who ELSE makes a good functional wing? I mean the Mugen piece shows it is useful, but it's super-JDM bling that costs lots of $$. I'm sure there are others that do not suffer the markup of the Mugen name.. Or do suffer markup of some other name..

Anyway, the point of this is, can people suggest some other adjustable spoilers(in replacement of the OEM wing)?

WC wing, but I am sure that's a lot of money too.

You could try to track down the Mugen RSX wing, or the Spoon DC2 wing...which I have never seen.

Chit, there are a lot of other wings out there...but a lot of them look no different than the APC aluminum adjustable things you see on the backs of V6 Mustangs.

well, are those functional(the APC chit)? if so, that's good to list too.. I was asking for ALL brands.. I don't care if it's JDM crap or not.. I was just asking about adjustable spoilers that are functional.. not just pretty or F&F..

I would imagine the APC stuff (and comparable brands) are devoid of most aerodynamic benefits. You get what you pay for, I imagine.

I believe that's an HPM wing, correct?

It's too bad no one makes a underbody tray for the rear of the DC2 Integra.

That would probably be a lot more functional than a rear wing.

Aerodynamics is kind of voodoo science. There's basic principles to follow - but you never really know what you are getting without a little trial and error - even still it is mostly guesswork.

I think ANY rear wing is better than none when it comes to reducing lift in the rear. All cars have lift at the rear at speeds above 60mph - it happens when ever you push something with a frontal area that's big (like a car) through the air.

Add on to this the front weight bias and the wedge shape of the Type R - you get lift.

I think Mugen is the only company to have bothered testing theirs in a wind tunnel - and for that I think it's worth it if you drive at the track a lot at high speed .

Otherwise stick with the rear-view reducing stock wing.

Good call.. I should point out this is for my track only R, hence wanting to replace the OEM wing.. it's not bad, but being able to adjust would be nice.. then again, Franza ran with his OEM wing all the time and was quite fast..

personally i wouldnt get all too worried/mixed up with the mugen wing. that thing was designed with that hideous but functional front & hood.

im sure it adds downforce, but if thats what your looking at for cheaper, get a APR.

btw, all that windtunnel testing i've seen was with a jdm front, mugen hood, and mugen front.

i've never seen them do it with a stock usdm itr with a mugen wing.

does this mean it wont work? no. but does it mean their wind tunnel testing applies for usdm cars either?

I saw this the other day, wondered if it really worked for the DC2:

i'm not really sure what that would do, aside from smooth the underside out?

Feels makes a wing that looks similar to the DC5R wing, I believe.

The guy who wrote that link doesn't even know how a wing works...

Air molecules don't magically "meet up" at the trailing edge of the wing. The bottom curved surface imparts (in this case) an upwards momentum on the flow since it will tend to follow a curved surface(if it is designed correctly). This momentum change is seen by the wing as a low pressure area on the bottom of the wing. Since there is a pressure differential, the wing will experience downforce equal to the pressure gradient integrated over the area of the wing.

So the air molecules on the more curved section DO speed up, but not in the linear direction, they are accelerated(usually) almost tangential to their original velocity vector. Most traditional subsonic aircraft wings will actually have the accelerated air on the curved part accelerate PAST the slower moving airmass on the other side of the wing, especially at high angles of attack.

angle of attack sounds so military... how bout angle of incidence?

W0w Marky...... You have been on track three times now total and you want a different wing.....

I say take the money for a new wing and drive another DE.

Crowhouse is the closest thing to an integrated aero concept for the DC2R.

a) I never said I was buying one anytime soon.. just that all the mugen bling threads made me think about this and go ahead and ask about functional spoilers for our cars(well, more functional than the OEM)..

b) I can drive all the HPDE's near me.. if I could take the vacation days, I'd tow it out and come play with you kids on the east coast too.. i'm not worried about the money right now..
