Default Question on swap from a DX to an SI

i own a '90 CRX dx and i have the rear disks from an SI that i am swapping on.

i need to do some transmission work also, so i figured why not rebuild the damn engine while im at it.

is it possible to replace my DX crankshaft and conn. rods with those from an SI, and therefore have a 1.6L since the BORE from the SI and DX are the same, but the STROKE of an SI is a little longer? Or is a block swap necessary?

I have the intake, fuel injection system, throttle body and ECU from an SI on the way too, in case you thought i forgot

I would just use the Si block and not deal with taking the DX one apart.

i dont WANT to swap the block tho

i dont own an engine hoist, so this is the easiest way for me to get it done

can it be done?

if i remeber correctly that won't work the pistons would kiss the valves but don't quote me on that but i am pretty sure the duration is different from the 1.5

You definately wouldn't want to do it without taking the block out and sending it to a machine shop!!! I think there are some clearance issues with the 1.6 crank that would require some machining for it to fit. It would definately be easier, safer, and more reliable by just swapping the entire engine.

You don't need an engine hoist, you can drop the engine to the ground and jack up the car high enough to slide the engine out from under it. Even easier with the head removed.

While your thinking of converting everything to Si, don't forget the tranny. I converted my '91 hatchback to Si drivetrain a step at a time in this order:
Intake manifold
Tranny
Engine

The Intake manifold (MPFI swap) made the bigest difference with the tranny being a very close second! swapping the 1.5 block for a 1.6 hardly made a noticable difference at all.

EDIT: [Shameless Plug] If you want to complete the Si conversion you'll need a factory sunroof. I happen to have one on Ebay right now:

thumpu77

in what way did the mpfi and the trasmission make the most difference. Was it shear performance or drive-feel, ease, fuel consumption, etc.

please elaborate.
thanks
john

Performance. Opening up the bottleneck (MPFI swap) and getting the gear ratio down low enough to let the engine work in it's powerband (tranny) can really bring these little engines to life.

thanks for the info, thumpu

i think i will just stick with the MPFI swap for now, the final drive for a DX is a little longer, so for highway driving it would be a bit better on fuel. i still wanna take this car on road trips, and doing 140 at 7500 rpm's the whole way isnt my cup of tea

not trying to build a racer, just trying to make the car a little more interesting

thanks again
