Default Launching the S2G...

What's up guys? Just had a question for all of you that have the privelage of racing an S2000. When doing the infamous 1/4 mile, what rpm do you guys prefer to launch at? I've experimented time and time again with dropping it from anywhere between 5,500 to practically a hair before redline(8,700). My back tires are fairly wide still and grab after only a second or two of burning. I plan to buy some smaller tires. Hoping for pirelli p-zeros but not for $200 a tire lol, maybe some toyo's or nitto drags. Anyway, so what do you guys launch at?

P.S.- I was told to buy a new lightweight flywheel such as a jun/spoon one,but then was warned that i would be ripping through the rpm's way too fast. Comments?

The perfect launch would be at 6500 rpm's all the way up to 7500 rpm's. Yeah, I know it's still high. Anything above 7500 rpm's would make you spin way too much (Unless it's a hot day, where you would have to drop the clutch at a higher rpm). Launching at anything less then 6500 rpm's or so will cause the S2000 to bog. An average driver can hit the 1/4 mile in the mid 14's, a good driver can hit it in the low 14's & a great driver can hit in the high 13's.

Why would go w/a smaller tire? Are you talking about smaller rims or smaller overall diameter tire for the 16" oem rims? The best tires are the oem Bridgestone S-02's due to their tenacious grip & handling. There's been plenty of other people that have tried other brands & most would agree w/me (At least for the s2k) that the oem tires are the best (In terms of performance). Yes, they're very expensive (around $200 the last time I checked), however they're defintely worth it.

What? Who or what company told you about the flywheel ordeal? That's absolutely BS. There's plenty of people that have a lightweight flywheel, including myself (Toda Racing) for the s2k. I've had the flywheel for almost a whole year w/no problems.

The best site for all s2k info is this:

actually, I would have to disagree.

I usually launch at 83-8400 RPMs...although its not wise considering my valvetrain, when the tires catch, you zoom out of the hole like a freaking rocket!
and these are on very cold nights with cold tires.
I raced my friend..who also has an S2000 and he launched his at 8000. He had the initial length, but once I caught, I immediately passed him by a car length..in first gear.

Is that in your ITR or an S2000? If it's an ITR, then that's a completely different car. You can't compare launching techniques w/both of them. If it's an s2000, then read on. What in the hell are you smoking? You sure about that? Try launching w/those numbers you did on a regular night, not a cold night. When I tried to launch at 8000 rpms, I just had way too much spin. I've never tried...83--8400 rpms, all I know is this's my method before I even went on the most popular s2000 website (www.s2000online.com) & everyone else agrees w/me that my method's the best for launching. So, you mean to tell me that you launch better at those numbers, when 500 plus members of an s2000 club say they launch better at 6500-7500 rpms? I doubt it. It's either that or your friend doesn't know how to launch well at all. Let me ask you this...Have you ever launched againt a z28 or a mustang gt (New gen) more then once? If so, did you win (Assuming there's bonestock)? If not, then more then likely you're technique (83-8400 rpms) is bad. The reason I say this's b/c I launch against them & I win 4 out of 5 times pretty convincingly.

Please dont get offended. I go on S2ki online as well.

Now I do own an S2000, and I am not smoking anything. Just because the method doesnt work for you...does not mean its impossible. Im not sure if you just keep your foot slammed to the ground while your car is spinning out... but..

whatever... it works for me. Its happened....more than once...thank you.

oh and my friend..is an awesome driver...and yes, bone stock GTs and Z28s

now..that I think about it, perhaps its because I feather the gas without knowing it..during a launch because I did that alot on my R...

Hey guys, it's me again. Just wanted to follow with you after taking the S2G down to Speedworld Motorplex last night. It was packed so we wanted to make the two or three runs we got in worth it. I found that popping the clutch from about 6,500 is the sweet spot. My 60 ft. time was like a 2.2 which i'm told is almost perfect for street tires on that track(not to mention minor oil puddles they were swabbing up at the line ) . With this launch i ran a 14.5 at almost 98 mph. Not bad for only having the car for three months...lol
