Help me identify weird problem: Car randomly dies while driving or on startups
89 civic dx
b17a
obd0 pr3 ecu
Symptoms: (seems to be getting worse)
-everything ran fine for a few months, just replaced the fuel pump
-randomly dies while driving. rpm just drops to zero.
-when trying to start the car again, it usually takes a few tries, car would fire up, then die again instantly.
Observations:
-when I turn the key 2 clicks, usually all the little indicators lights light up for a couple seconds, and I can hear the fuel pump prime. However when car was exhibiting symptoms last night, this didn't happen.
I would turn the key 2 clicks, and everything's still dark (no fuel pump priming). Only when I turned it a bit more(between 2 clicks and ignition), the lights would light up.
I was able to fire up the car, and maintain the engine running while holding the key at this position, but as soon as I let it return to the 2-click position, car dies instantly.
I am stumped, I have some guesses, but I'd like to hear opinions first. Thanks

Sounds like your ignition switch is bad. It happens. Specially if someone had a lot of keys on their key ring.

i had that exact same problem in my 89 LX and it was the ingnition swich.
yeah, I just searched for ignition switch, and people are describing this exact problem - driving w/ one hand holding the key... lol
I think Ill get a new one from the dealer and give it a shot. If anyone else have suggestions, plz contribute.

another option would be to find the wire the switch turns on and cut it and hook it to a physical switch. Just make sure it is rated for the correct amperage.
on a side note. This is a good idea if you want to hide the switch. Makes the car difficult to steal if they cannot start it.
