splitting stock rod caps with ARP bolts
Has anyone other than me had a hell of a time trying to split the rod caps off stock rods after they had arp's pressed in (and the rods resized)?
When I got them back from the machine shop, they were torqued down, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to hold them to tap the caps off.

the way i did it, my jack has a handle with a rubber end I put a couple rags around it made sure it was clean. Slipped the rod in. I held on tite and my friend untorqued the rods.
they sell Rod Vice's on jegs and summit, but i found this to work very well and took 2 seconds really and no damage done.
EDIT:: just realized ur bolts arent torqued on? or are they? To Separate it use the same technique just be careful so it doenst fall. have your friend hold the other end.
They sell rod separators also. They are like 100+ bucks. Jegs/summit

Unbolting the nuts was the easy part. It's just the ARP's are a tighter fit and I can't get the caps off by myself. I'll have to enlist the help of a friend later this week.

ok, i think i understand what you're saying... so im assuming you have the engine apart and probably have the block on an engine stand.
so grab a piece of wood that will fit in the cyl and rest against the inside of the piston and tap it out... it will break the pressure loose thats holding the caps to the arp rod bolts. a wooden hammer handle or even better a rubber deadblow handle work great also.
also, just on the chance you have a block guard installed, make sure you take it out first or you will have a hell of a time getting the piston out.

I'm holding the rod/piston in my hand. I need to get the caps off so I can clearance the rod bearings. When the rods came back from the machine shop from having the arp's pressed in/rods resized, the bolts were torqued.

Ah ok i see. you should be able to tap the caps off then from the edge... might take a little while each. just use a small rubber mallet or tape up the end of a ball peen so it doesnt ding it and just tap on each edge. the vibration will work the cap loose.
