Radar Detector
yes they work. valentine 1 is the best on the market, but pretty pricey. i bought a cobra about 2 years ago and it works fine. never heard of 'radar detector detectors'. i know in some states they're illegal, so you might want to check before buying one for you
radar detectors are illegal in my state (virginia). if you get caught with it they'll take it and/or fine you for having one.
i used to have years ago when i lived in savannah and drove home to virginia - in a jeep not a lude, so i wasn't a target then anyways - in georgia i went a best buy and pick out the cheapest radar detector i could afford, i can't remember the brand - it was crap though, so many things other than cops would set it off.
I think the radar detector could be worth while if you're driving long distance like i was (500 miles) and its all highway and you don't want to be picked for having out of state tags doing 10-15 over while the in state cars are flying by you at 20-25 over and even being blinked at by the cops.
but if you're getting to avoid cops while speeding from stop light to stop light - well common sense should prevent you from this.
and yes, there are "radar detector detectors", the cops send out a signal that detects the common bands that most radar detectors use and then they can tell you have a radar detector - you can avoid this but it will cost you $$$ - but i don't think there's a chance in hell you'll get out of a ticket once the cop knows you've a detector on you.
my 2 cents
sorry so long

I have the Valentine 1. I would never buy any other detector. The rest suck IMO. I love having the arrows to show me where the cop is. It costs $400 but IMO if it saves me 1 ticket it has paid for itself. Figure average ticker here (MA) is almost $200. Then you have to pay an insurance surcharge of at least $200/year for 6 years. So that one ticket for going 20MPH over the limit is going to cost you $1,400
So $400 is well worth it.
Remember they are radar detectors not cop detectors! They will not save you 100% of the time. Do not rely on them!

The best radar detector besides not speeding is your eyes. Keep your eyes open, look for places where you think they might be waiting for you, like over hills, etc. I used to be an avid radar detector user, but I found that with the new laser technology the cops have, it will only tell you your busted.
Bottom line, if you see them before they see you, you have enough time to drop your speed and cruise by. And like I said above, think like a cop, look for where they might be sitting. Just this past weekend, my wife was driving and two times I told her that she may want to put it a little closer to the speed limit, and two times, there was a cop less than a mile ahead. Psychic......

What everyone else said, but one addition. As far as "radar detector detectors" go, most radar detectors today come with VG-2 cloaking. Basically it hides your detector from the polices detectors.
Don't ask me how it works cause I don't know.

yea i got hit by laser twice ... is anyone coming out with one that dectects lasers ... i know its not really possible but i heard they are trying to make one that dectects the instant that the laser is turned on before firing ... any dectectors coming out that can help against laser?

Exactly

another good thing is too keep your car low key. no chrome, bright colors ect. also stick to the outside lane. cops have to aim their radar somewhat and they almost always put it to the fast lane. the more rounded your car, the better it shows up on their radar. 5th gens are good at slipping by, lots of flat angular surfaces. you could just go the limit, but where's the fun in that?
