Default Having Trouble.

I thought this day would never come, I am having trouble at this point in my life trying to find myself. Right now things are changing fast, and i really dont want to grow up. I dont know what to do.

My motor blew 3 nights ago, and i am broke as a joke at the moment. School is starting in a week, and i was just informed my family might be moving away.

The more and more i think about building the motor and getting the car 1000x times stronger, the more i think about all the $$$ I have put into the car. The last 3 years of my life have basically been my car. My options basically are, take a loan and go 5,000 into debt, or part the car out and try to sell it and buy a new car.

Right now that 5,000 doesnt sound to bad (that 5,000 consist of other bills)
I really dont want to give up my R. I love the car when im driving it, i hate the car when its down. Everyone tells me to sell it and get a normal car, and drive it until i get out of school. My dad tells me "youve wasted all that money." I dont know what im gonna do.

Question:
You guys who have sold your pride and joy, do you miss it?

My R was my money pit until someone stole it from me. I loved it and still do. I picked up a s2000 and as much as i want to mod it, i won't. Any mod = an arm, leg, and something else. I'm happy. Maybe I'll mod it when I am done school but by then I think i will be ready for something better. Just do what makes you happy

jordan, IMO you should sell all your turbo stuff, return it to stock and get yourself out of debt that way. then you'll have money to burn on other things (school, lady friend, etc) and still have your pride and joy. no worries there

and besides, you can still turbo it in the future when you can afford to do it right. build the block, tune it well, and so forth.

GL in whatever you decide to do. you know where i stand, ******

thats not a bad plan. sell what you don't need save your money and drive the car stock while still enjoying everything else, Don't let life revolve around the car.

I have to agree with these three Gents. Especially the guy with the missing grill in his avatar shot.

Stay positive. That's key. Life always sorts its self out. Since your strapped for cash, walk around the house and take an assessment of what you need and what you don't need. The key word is NEED. You NEED a car to get to school. You do not NEED a turbo in the car to get to school. What else is in your house that you do not NEED? Make a list, put the **** on ebay.

Remain optimistic. Just when you think you've hit rock bottom, something comes along and it changes everything. Such as the cycle of life. I feel that's how it works. There have been times where I was laid off work for several months and had to make choices between paying the rent or eating. There have been times where I've had less than a dollar in the bank account, no job and half a tank of gas. In these times you will see how recourceful and how tactful you are. Look at it this way; You will never hit rock bottom. Never. You may think you have. This is a hard one for people to grasp. Things could always be worse, but you will never be at rock bottom. I don't think there are many people out there who have. Do you know what it is? I don't, because in spite of my misfortunes, I've never felt like I've hit.

Look at the positive aspects of things and that will help. You still have a car, you still have a roof over your head and if it comes down to it, you can live of Top Ramen and pocket lint for a while.

I'm sure you will make the right decisions. Just think it out thoroughly and ALWAYS look at the positive side of things.

very good advice guys. Jordan - if I were you, I would (like the others said) sell all of the turbo gear, and return the car to stock. See if you can find a nice stock B18C bottom end to drop in (or even B18A - ls/vtec yO), and just enjoy the car for a while (is the head okay?). If the head is toast, just swap in a regular old B18A block - so at least you'll have something to drive.

IMO it's not worth going that far into debt, just to say you have a "kickass built motor"...

You can always build up the B18 later for boost, or sell it after you've rebuilt the C5 - when you have the money.

If you sell the R now, you will probably regret it later. An N/A R is better than no R.

Good luck with whatever you choose

I would have to agree with everyone as far as selling all of the turbo stuff. A stock ITR is a VERY fun car to have in college and it is very reliable as well. Get your debt payed off, get through school, then go from there. Good luck with everything and I hope that it works out

It's not worth it to dig yourself into a hole of debt in order to make your car fast, this I know from experience. You will regret it if you sell the car, so my advice would be to return the car to stock and enjoy it. You can always build something bigger & better sometime down the road when you are in a better position to do so. Learn from other people's mistakes, I am still paying off debt from the last car I built, and that car's been gone for over two years now

Its funny how things coordinate b/c i am going through a similar situation as we speak.....minus the blown motor of course !

Everyone above has relatively agreed upon one thing and that is "dont let a caR own you"........Yes you will miss the caR/turbo set-up, but you will always have time to "play" again. Concentrate on whats most important in your life i.e.....school, family, lady-friend/s !

Take some time to seriously consider your options but do whats right for you....and not what you want, thats the battle i am struggling to overcome right now myself. I would rather spend money i dont have and have fun now, rather then make the $$$$ and pay for something with $$$$ i do have!

Weigh you options as stated, and do whats best for you

Don't do anything drastic. Take time to think about your options with a clear head.

I sold all my car stuff and considered selling the car - but now I don't want to nor do I think I HAVE to.

It's important to make the right decision - and that requires time to think about all variables and options.

Return it to stock, minus the suspension & brake mods. Stock is more than enough to have fun.

If you were to poll the forum, you'd hear back from 90% of the owners wishing that there cars were stock or almost stock.

College is time to educate yourself and, also, have parties. It would suck to not be able to do that 'cuz you've got a $5k debt. If I were you, I would drive a stock R + $$ from the mods and enjoy your time in college. When you make real money after school, that's when you can start to have real fun with everything in life.

G'luck.

As a junior in college who had a boosted si, blew it, rebuilt it, sold it, and bought a gsr, let me tell you it wasn't the most fun for me.. Put the type r back to near stock motor wise (keep all the other cool ****) and enjoy it till you are done with school or have enough money that it doesnt matter if things break.

If i were to take a loan, i would have zero free spending for about 3 months..

I dont want to give up since im so close to what ive been waiting for the last 3 years. A built motor will be reliable. returning the car to stock would be alot of work

What happens when the money from that $5K loan is gone and the motor blows again?

Not saying it will happen, but what if it does?

Is your R the only car you have??? If not... put off on buying or putting any money into it till you get back on your feet and are able to spend once again on it.

Its always nice to have a commuter car in case the R is sick. a beater may only cost you a grand...

My advice...

Take the loan and build the car, it's only $5k so it's not like your going too far into debt. The way I look at it you only live once and do you think your more likely or less likely to build a turbo car later in life when your starting a family/looking to buy a house/etc? I think if you wanna do it do it now!

< Playing devil's advocate.

See that's the kind of thinking that gets you further into debt (and misery) in the first place.

What these wise men are advising you to do is reassess your priorities esp. from a financial standpoint.

If you are wise - you are thinking about your future and planning accordingly.

Do you have a financial plan? Do you have any RSPs? Do you have a long term plan for where you are going to be in 5 years? 10 years? Have you even thought about that?

Getting older involves all of this stuff - you may not want to get older as you said - but like it or not you are.

Having a plan makes things easier.... doing it all and still having money in the bank is sweeter still.

Jordo - I put off all plans of modding cars - even going out for 10+ years to educate myself so that I have a good career. That takes some discipline to do - but you know what? I'm sorted now and I don't have to worry so much about paying the bills.

Cars are fun - but they are also huge money pits. You rarely get out what you put in (apart from the fun)

Good luck

Damn, i know what your situation feels like man. I blew my motor, and i had zero cash. I had to take time off from school, and work..now i'm rebuilt, and lovin it. School just seems to be out of the picture though.. i suggest you finish school with a beater, and rebuild the R slowly. Don't make the mistake i did, and ditch school for the car. Even though i don't regret it at all. lol
