swapping heads...... good\bad\what the hell am I thinking
OK I did a search and I'm getting conflicting information. Can I swap a a2 head on a a3? Basically can I swap a type s head to a regular rsx motor? Please post and let me know if this is possible and any info pertaining to the swap power differences\do's and dont's\ etc. Thanks in advance for the assistance
you'll need the entire A2 head (including camshafts, rocker arm assemblies, valves, valve springs, retainers) and an A2 ECU. you'll also need the A2 intake manifold, fuel rail & throttle body, and for best results the A2 exhaust setup from the header back. The camshaft position sensors and both VTC and VTEC solenoids can supposedly be reused from the A3, if the A2 head doesn't come with them.
Gains? close to 25 whp. Cost? depends if you're lucky enough to find a fairly complete head at a decent price; could be about 2 grand for all the above, plus installation.

Yes, it is possible.. in fact I saw a complete writeup on in on ClubRSX. However..... it seemed like an AWFUL lot of cash for a pretty small return.
the A3 intake manifold and fuel injection parts CAN be used, but i wouldnt recommended. i just did this swap onto a 03 si for one of the customers at the dealership i work at. the guy didnt want to spend the money for the A2 intake, but it only made 189 on the dyno. not very impressive gain. had done it before with the A2 intake and made 198, soooo.............. it'll work with the A3 intake, but it's worth it to get the A2

I just tuned an 03 Si with only the A2 head, a cold air intake and exhaust to 196-7whp with Kpro, and as per the customer's request we only ran it to 8000rpm. Here's a shot of the customers tuned map vs. my tuned map. I'd say that's pretty good power just with the head swap.

that's my car for those that are wondering...btw, I had put down 165 whp before the A2 head. 32whp gains for about 2500 invested...not bad considering that includes kpro and a $450 laptop, install price and tuning
if you want a type s head, might as well pick up a tpe r motor, or type s head and tsx bottom. save your stock motor.

type s head with stuff = 1700-2000
k20a = 5500+
Type S head/k24 = head 1700-2000 + 1100-2000 for bottom.
(High stroke = not that rev happy...)
Looks like the k20a2 head swap wins in cost and ease.
But, IMO, it's best to get the k20a2 for costs and function.
