Default Drain and fill : Transmission fluid

I've read a few posts and many of you guys say to drain 2.5 quarts/fill 2.5 and then repeat the process. So in total, I'll use 5 quarts. When I went to honda to buy the fluid, the guy said just drain and fill 3 quarts ONCE, which will leave some old fluid mixed in there. Which option should I do? 98accrd. thanx

pop the bolts out, let it drain, put the bottom plug back in, start filling, let the excess run out the top, put the top one back in...

if you want to get all the old crap out, i think you need a flush??

The capacity for a tranny drain/refill is 2.6 Qts. as per the Helm's manual for a '98 Accord.

Best bet is to drain/refill two times. Make sure car is operating at normal temp.

You'll know this when the fan kicks in.

You're also going to need to buy 6 Qts.

I think 3 qt would suffice - and not to repeat it twice. if you want to do it right, you also should do the engine oil change twice.. I do not think it makes sense or is necessary. maybe some people could use some life here. most important thing is to ensure you have changed the transmision oil on schedule and let alone change it twice.

there are zillions of things you could go overboard with cars.

I have changed my trans. oil say 3 times with my accord and it has 180 k miles and it going strong. No, I did not do the oil change twice.

I've always heard that if the fluid looks & smells good, just drain & fill once as preventative maintenance.

If the fluid smells burnt or looks brown, then drain & fill 3 or 4 times so you remove as much of the bad fluid as you can.
