New Bridgestone DOT legal R Tire coming to the US?
I was at Beaverun yesterday and saw talked to a guy who is a Bridgestone/Firestone rep. He had an RX-7TT with a Japan imported R-Tire (I think the model was an RE-555 but don't hold me to that). He says its coming to the US next year and will be SCCA Solo2 legal for stock class. Looked like an A032R with fewer tread sipes. The rubber felt softer than Hoosier A3S04s.
He took a few runs on our test and tune autocross course. His times matched my Type R (on Hoosiers). While the RX-7 should be faster than a Type R, I had been running the course all afternoon; and he hasn't autocrossed in several years. The car looked good out there.
these might be tires to look out for next year.

I've heard nothing but good things about the RE-55S. Can't wait to try them...i was going to try import a set in for myself. Looks like i don't have to now. I just hope that they bring all size availible.
RE-540S is an older tire, RE-55S is new and supposedly a lot better than the RE-540S.
Take a look at this for more info about sizes and compounds available over here in Europe, you just have to hope you get the full lineup when the arrive next year : http://www.sportreifen.com/sport_bild.htm

Let's see. That'll be:
Hoosier-Daddy
Michelin
Toyo
Kumho (3 flavors)
Avon
Hankook
and now Bridgestone
in the US DOT R-tire market. Somebody's going to take a bath.

I wonder (judging my the look of the re55s) if they're going to be assigned "Left" and "Right" sides like the Pirelli P Zero Corsa? Oh, and I can't wait to get me a set of either the 55 or the 540!

Forgive my German, but I believe the ad for the re55s' reads:
"Newest generation racing tire. Perfect traction and stability (could also be durability).
And the re540 reads:
"The watermark for national slalo, rally and road racing tires. Very good performance and stability (durability)."

For those not so good in German, yes this means they are to be ordered in right and left sides.

a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, i used to run the RE-71-R tires as my daily driver/auto-x/trackday tires year round (on a 91 stock miata). really liked that tire alot! bought just about the last set Appalation ever had, i think!

What was the difference between the RE71 and RE71-Rs? I had (still have actually) a set of RE71s that were pretty damned sticky for street tires but never knew they had a track tire available. Was this an import at the time? This is pretty cool that there continue to be DOT R compounds being added to the mix over here - I do wonder if they have the smaller sizing that Pirelli and Michelin don't seem to.
How very cool - I did not know that. Wild wacky stuff
So were they the same tread pattern as the street compounds? Which version was "designed" for the 959, the street or the R-comps? (this was the tire Bridgestone designed for the 959 right?)

I remember the RE71 being the tire of choice for the 959...doing a quick Google search brought up the other tire used on that car... They were Dunlop "Denloc" run-flat tires which probably the first of the high performance run-flat breed. After I saw that, I can think back to my days in middle school fantasizing over this car that, yes, there were two suppliers.
I wonder, as well, if the RE71s that were OEM on the 959 were necessarily the same RE71 (that MANY people knew and loved) compound that us average Joes could purchase in the smaller sizes. I don't think they were called an RE71-R on the Porsche, but I could be mistaken.

I miss the *old* R1, the one before the P.O.S. G-force. And I really miss the RE71. Good damn tire. Before the Azenis, it was the tire to have in STS. Even the year the Azenis was released, I believe STS was won on RE71s. Best street tire I've used on track too. The RE750 *looks* a bit like the RE71. A student of mine at Summit had them and they damn sure felt like the RE71.
Damn I must be getting old....
