<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by winlo408 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">seems like i have to take off the drive axle for the driver side does anyone know if thats true? and if so how do i do that?</TD></TR></TABLE>Don't know about '86 exactly, but several other years/cars it's true. So it's not outrageous...

Search for CV joint or axle replacement. I've seen a decent write-up around here somewhere. Better yet, even a Haynes manual is probably OK for axle removal.

It says in the manual that you need to remove the axle, but you do NOT need to remove it. LX-i is real easy for alt once you know how. Simply take the airbox off and you have much greater access. Two 14mm holding it on, gotta get one from the top and one from the bottom (wheel well area), then loosen the adjuster (10mm) and slip the belt off, take the electrical connectors off, then slide the alt across along the bottom over to the passenger side, comes right out. I can have one out in about 15 min, so it's really not too involved.

I had to pull the axel to change the alternator on my '85 accord. There was no way in hell it was gonna come out another way.

with a little twisting, turning, grunting, and cursing, i yanked mine straight through the top. it was a tight fit, and not easy, but i didn't have to pull the axle to do it.
