Default why does my switch heat up?

ok i hooked up a switch to run both my a/cfan and rad fan the switch is a 25amp rated(switch) and it works fine and all but when i turn the fans on the switch and wires are almost to hot to touch i believe the wire is either 16 or 14 guage and i ran the wire from the front(from the fans) to the console on my ebrake can anyone tell me why this gets hot all the time? and is it safe? how can it be done without heating up??

You Are running to small of a Gauge wire for that long of a run. That fan is pulling Alot of amps. You need to wire in a relay, If you dont will have a fire hazzard.

on the switch i only have the ground wired. the power is uncut is it still a fire hazard with only the ground (i thought that only matters when the power wire is involved) and would i still have to use a relay??

the best thing to do is put a relay near the fans and wire the swich side to hot and the fans. put the hot also on one side of the coil then thake the other side and run a wire though your firewall to a swich. put the other side of the witch to a nearby ground.

To be honest The ground side is the side with all the power thats why If youre grounds suck on youre car it wont run right. But If the Wire is to small it will heat up. Im not sure what you mean BTW about how it is Set up.

So you didn't run the positive threw the car. You ran the ground threw the car and now its getting to hot.
If thats What you ment do this. Ground then fan somewear under the hood. Get a relay mount it near the fan run the wiresto the relay And the battery. Now run the + low Amperage Signle wire into the car and to the swicth. Since it only tells the relay to to click over. You can wire it to youre ignition switch if you wanted and Elimimate the toggle switch all together. But doing that will make the fan run all the time to.

I think thats what you ment. If not Explain allittle more i try to help better.

EDIT: I took to long to type JC18 beat me to it.

ok in your car the fan works off of a ground so if u use the switch to ground the fan then it would not heat up because sooner or later that switch and the wires are going to catch on fire because u are running to much current thru them
