Um... Is someone trying to kill me, or did my lug nuts loosen by themselves?

I was driving to pick up a dvd burner, when I noticed my car started to seem to grind when I would brake... It also made a clicking noise when I would hit the gas then get off and the weight of the car would shift.
So I pulled over and looked at my cv boot, or for any objects. Nothing.
I come home, and I'm ready to pull the wheel off thinking theres a rock between the brake pad and disk, when I put the socket on and it just turns on the nut. The ******* nuts were loose!
How can this happen? My only theory is...
I put new rotors and pads on about 300 miles ago. Did I not put the rotor on all the way? I tightened the screws.. Something that slipped my mind to check just now.. Can the rotor seat it self after awhile? I torqued the wheel down to 80..
The other side seemed ok too, but were a bit loose. The rears were ok. But I just bled the rears, didn't change the rotors.
Anyone have any idea as to why this happened? I distinctly remember torqueing all the wheels down after I was done too. This is something I always do...

And I just realized... That grinding feeling was probably my wheel grinding along the threads of the bolts. Arg, my lug nuts still thread on fine, think I need to worry about the threads? I torqued the wheel down to 80 too with no problem....
I think someone messed with your car. Do you have locking nuts for your rims? Was the locking nut loose as well? If all your nuts are loose except that one, then you know something is up.

No. If the threads were worn, the lug nuts wouldn't screw on smoothly; you would feel some resistance and would need a bit more force. As long as they screw on as smoothly as they did before, no worries.
As for how they got that way, it's always possible that you missed a wheel, even though you could swear you torqued them all down. (Been there, done that.)
Of course, just because your lug nuts may have loosened by themselves (or you may have forgotten to tighten them), doesn't mean that there isn't someone out there trying to kill you.

I usually re-torque my lugs a couple hundred miles after I've worked on them. 95% they are all torqued correctly, but everyonce in a while you find one that some how came a little loose.
Were all 5 loose? Sometimes the rim won't sit completely onto the rotor or get hung up on that lip on the rotor and will leave about an 1/8" grap between the rim and the rotor. Then driving around causes the rim to finally seat and thus cause the lugs to be lose and loosen up more while driving.
To avoid this last problem, I usually put the rim on, hand tighten the lug nuts, leaving just loose enough so you can wiggle the wheel. While wiggling, look in the rim where it sits on the rotor and make sure they are flat against each other.

Kenny Sr.'s right but under certain circumstances, it could be something else.
(Not callin you Old Ken)
Kenny Jr. thinks - You're from Chicago too so you know what goes down. What kind of wheels do you have? Some kids might be trying to steal your wheels or what not and just left them loose cause a car drove by or whatever. How loose were they?

2 years ago, i changed the ujoints in my Jeep Crand Cherokee. We used one of the torque limiting bars to put the wheels on with an impact driver. Something fucked up (undertightend) and I lost the wheel at 70mph on the highway... Scared the S&^(& out of me...
I now torque all wheels TWICE AROUND...

yea they're all stock. lug nuts and wheels. the fronts, which i changed the rotors were looser than the rears. but I always noticed the rears were on tighter. maybe my torque wrench needs to be recalibrated too.
the only thing i'm worried about is when i was braking, it wasn't smooth at all and i'm concerned something might have happened to the threads... i'll probably retorque after a while.
meh..
thanks!

i work at sears, and on the disclaimer it says alloy wheels must be retorqued after 20 miles.

unfortunately, I've had this happen too.... but it definitely wasn't me. Started driving the caR home and b4 i even got out of the parking lot, the caR was shaking and felt like it was gonna fall apart....
Sure enough, DF wheel- 2 lugs gone and the other 3 loose. PF wheel- 3 or so were loose
.
Had to replace 3 of the studs.

Some one was screwing with you. No doubt. This happened to me with my last GSR when I was living in these shady *** apartment buildings. No offense to you honest people out there, but there were some shady Russian guys living there that I had heard stories from several people.
After that little experience I paid to lock my GSR up in the RV storage that had locks and barb wire. You don't have to be that extreme, but at least I was able to sleep at night knowing my rims weren't going to get jacked or worse, my car.
Already went throught that one once too, definately don't want to go through that **** again.
Get locking nuts! Don't let people man handle your nuts. Secure them!

maybe your torque wrench is off. i check torque 10-20 miles after removing wheels, then again within 100-200 miles.
I've seen my lugs loosen yes,
but only a few lbs, like 5lbs at the most..
NOT enough to come completely loose!!
but I guess anything can really happen...
but seriously.. the more logical thing would be that either YOU did something wrong,
or someone messed with your car.
if the last time you took off the lugnuts was 300 miles! then **** man.. they wouldnt just allofasuden pop off 300 miles later.. thats nutty.
somones being ******* lame with u

its funny you mentioned that story... awhile back on my GSR i had gram lights, and apparently someone didnt know i had two different locks on each wheel. They ended up taking 1 lug nut off and I did not notice til (probably and hopefully) the day after. I seriously freaked out
Seriously, if I had a nickel for every time I forgot to completely tighten my nuts I'd... maybe have 40 cents. It's happened to me in the R 3 times on the track. One of those times they worked themselves so loose that a stud snapped off. I pitted, retightened and got back on. The other two times weren't too bad. It's happened in my 4Skinner twice on the street this summer. One time I tightened them, towed 100 miles to the track, 100 miles back, then about 50 miles later on the street I felt a vibration and all my nuts were loose.
You think I'd learn...

I've had something similar happen to me. I went to the track, switched wheels, then switched back to go home and I know I torqued the lugs. 1/2 way home the car starts shaking and such, I pull over, and check and sure enough, they were loose. Torque again, get almost home, and they are loose again. I pull the wheel off and notice that the rotor retaining screw has somehow backed itself off and was in crooked causing the wheel not to seat properly. That may or may not be the case here, but something to look at.

mostly when I was just starting out working on my car.
put em on hand tight, get distracted.. think you torqued em.. drive off.. CLINKETY CLINKETY... FUUUUCKKK!! haha.

Everyone who has NEVER done this, raise your hands.
Funny, I don't see a whole lot of hands up in the air...

Sorry Ken, but I have to disagree. I had a wheel come loose (paint came off where the lugs seat) at 100-120mph (not sure when exactly but was sustained at that speed until I felt the shaking). Anyways, figured out what was wrong within 2 miles of the shake starting and 2 of the studs broke off (sheared) within 5 thousand miles and the other 2 stripped (this is a gs-r
). All torqued back on fine two times (to 80 ft lbs) before that happened.

Same here.. I've forgotten before but remembered before driving
Never saw paint come off the stock wheels but it's worth checking.
