Is this normal?
My car seems to always lag/hesitate and even jump during first gear. It happens particulary when I accelerate from a stop. It seems that I feel it the most while accelerating from zero at a slow rate. Tranny flush maybe?
Depending on your milage you may need to change it. Also Does this happen cold or hot? If its happening cold that is normal, it will shift harder then smooth out as it warms up.
Explain what you mean by jumping into first or lagging...... Be more specific. I also have a 98 accord 4-cyl. auto. with 125k. First, tell me your mileage and describe your problem with details. I have noticed my car clunks when I drive from zero to first gear very slowly. If I accelerate quickly at a standstill, no clucking noticed while shifting into first gear. All other gears shift perfectly. Is this what you are experiencing? Do you also hear a slight clunk as you come to a stop? I talked to a HONDA foreman and he says I have "driveline slack". He says this is normal with age. Have you been changing your auto fluid every 30k like you should be with HONDA FLUID only? If so then a flush probably won't help, but would not hurt either.

Pretty much exactly what you described! And as Turbowa mentioned, it usually happens when the car is cold. Mileage:55K. Have not changed the tranny fluid as often as I should so I guess I'll do that since I need to anyways. Thanks

At 55k, how many times have you drain/refilled the transmission fluid? Yeh, a cold transmission shifts rougher probably because the fluid is cold and your RPM's is running a bit highter until the engine warms up.

I have never changed it since I bought the car used over a year ago.

If I were you I would drain/refill the fluid immediately using only HONDA FLUID. Drive around a couple of miles and do it again. Transmission should shift smoother.
I was experiencing this problem and it turned into a real problem after a while with the transmission slipping often. I have a 2000 Accord 4cyl auto. with a perfect service record. Turns out that my transmission was under an extended warranty due to a known problem. They extended the transnission warranty to 7 years/160,000 KM! You might want to look into that.
