Jdm d15 swapped ef have performance issues...help
Sup guys/gals
So i have a 91 std hatch with a jdm sohc vtec swap...approx. 50,XXX miles with the following. I/H/piping/E, stock cat, nology hot wires, msd blaster coil, and msd sci ignition box. 91 dx tranny...90,XXX miles, stock clutch. So yea...that about sums up the motor...heres the problem. Everything was running perfect..perfect idle, no codes, just did an oil change and coolant flush...and just moved, so its been driven alot in the last couple of weeks mileage wise. The other day, I was driving from a friends house and i hit about 5,000 rpms and the performance seemed to die out...it sounded like the vtec was hitting in a dohc motor, but much lower toned noise, and it would not accelerate anymore, so i change gears, thinking maybe its just that gear or some gliche and it does the same thing til about 5 grand, then wont go higher or accelerate more...so it got me thinking...whats the problem....tranny? I may be low on fluid there....intake issue??, valve issue?? please help...it only does it every now and then, but i was thinking maybe the change in climate and temp may be factors too as i have moved frm a pretty climate controlled place to a place where the ave temp is 100 deg...so any suggestions would be helpful...thanks in advance
i should also note that i am throwing no codes, and have no other performance issues, and the motor temp is fine....please help...thanks

where is it redlining?
If it stops shortly after 5500 then VTEC is not kicking in
what ECU are you running?

since you mentioned a tone change, but no power it sounds to me like your timing may have skipped a tooth. good luck
possibly the timing thing could be an issue but my problem with that theory is that it does not do it all the time, but rather every now and then.
as far as the ecu goes...that is a possible, but again...its not a consistant enough thing to make me think that is the issue.
its not that i am too used to my car, cuz yes, i had that issue where it seemed slower then it was, but thats definetly not it either, because this is a clear difference in performance that spans far beyond me adjusting to the power curve.
vtec...i dont think thats it either only because...the vtec will still kick, but when it bogs down, it sounds like a low deep vtec sound, but it wont accelerate anymore past that point and its only at about 5000 rpms....my normal redline is about 7200...and since vtec kicks at 5500, it never engages when the problem happens
thanks for all the input guys...please keep it coming...anything is better then nothing and for now it all keeps my from dropping a ton on a mechanic...thanks again...but i still need help....
