Default '92 Accord EX Coupe Transmission / Shift position sensor problem

I have a '92 Accord EX Coupe A/T with a (transmission?) problem. Sometimes I would be driving on the highway and it would rev up (rpm not speed) and the D4 light would light up bright and it would seem to be kinda out of gear. However, the D4 light would not be flashing. The car then seems to be driving at D3, but I am not sure, and it would not change gears. When this is the case, if you try to put it in any other gear both gears lights would be on, for example in park, I have P and D4 on. Gears that work in this condition are N, P, R and 1 although both gear lights would be on. D2, D3, and D4 all do not engage.
So, when I take off I would have to put in it D1 for it to pick up (otherwise pickup would be very slow) and then shift to either D2,D3,orD4 and it would make no difference. Typically I drive at 3000rpm for 70-75mph, but with the problem, 3000rpm would be at 45mph.
Funny, this seems to be a common problem when it's raining, I don't know if rain has anything to do with it. I took it to a mechanic and carged me $30 without even connecting it to a machine, and said the problem is probably with the shift position sensor malfunctioning. He said it would be about $350. He kinda ripped me off.
Anyone with an idea of what might be the problem..? Any suggections for fixing it..?
Thanks.

I have the exact same problem. Shift position doesn't seem to be cause since the shift position indication cycles through all positions, however the D4 light remains on. In D1 or D2 the transmission is in 2nd and D3 and D4 transmission is in fourth. Other times D1 is first and D2,D3,D4 is third. If I disconnect the battery temporarily, I can get Auto xmission to work normally, for a while. Which sensor is the problem???
