cai help
You say that money is tight, but i would still suggest buying one of the cheap CAI from ebay and then putting a quality filter on the end of it. If you go to ttry and build one, there is a very good chance that you will end up spending the same amount of money on supplies.
However, i made mine for my G3 using 3 inch exhuast flexpipe, ive seen other ppl use PVC pipe, ive also seen 3 inch dryer hose used. Im not too familier with the engine bay of the G2's, but make sure you plan out what you are going to do and what material you think would work best.

Just pull everything before the filter, and run a tube (PVC, flex exhaust pipe, whatever) from the filter box into the fender. Custom icebox, minimal cost. Change the filter for best results.
edit: Sorry, not sure if that applies to the earlier tegs.

I had a cheap Ractive short ram intake on my DA for a bit. I ended up changing the filter to a K&N and bought a small section of 3" polished aluminum (intake) pipe, a coupler and a couple clamps for $60-ish (Canadian). Here's some pics:

thanx guys. I had found somewhere before how to make an aem cold air intake with a peice of exhaust pipe (only required about 3 cuts) and using rubber tubing over the joints for a ram air filter. I don't remember where i found this though. guess i'll keep looking. thanks guys.

that's how i make mine when i don't wanna weld it together, J-bend/U-bend exhaust pipe (2.5-3in depending on TB), 3 PVC rubber clamps (2 for short ram), and a K&N filter... i cut mine i think 3 times and had 2 in of pipe left over. Real easy if you just get the pipe and eyeball it for corners/cuts.. the one i made for my car was painted, fabricated, and has a 6.5 in K&N cone filter on it for just under $100
