High idle speed, overheating, '88 Accord w/ carburetor
Now I know I am not the only one with this problem. 90 percent of the time she runs nigh perfectly (170k miles, carbed, automatic)..
After running 20 minutes or more and in stop and go traffic, sometimes the RPMs will climb to 2.6K, not a good thing during "idle"; and horribly impossible at shut-down. Also serious overheating occurs at the same time - I blip the throttle- this usually causes the RPM to drop.
The other gentlemen citing dieseling (about a month ago) as a problem described the same RPM.
More to come.

Does is have a mechanical linkage from the choke to the fast-idle cam? If so it sounds like it just needs to be cleaned & adjusted. That was a pretty regular job on the last carb car I owned.
Clean the carb thoroughly against varnish buildup. Best way is to remove the carb and while it's off, replace any gaskets between the lower plate and the carb. Then spray the hell out of it with carb cleaner and drip dry. Work the linkage while it's wet.
I had two similar problems, about 8 months apart. First problem, RPM's up high, and had to floor the gas to get it to start. Somehow the lower carb plate was loose and pulled a rubber gasket in partially. Pulling it apart, reseating the gasket and re-assemble fixed the problem.
Second problem was, RPM's would stay at 3K+ whenever I'd floor it in a low gear, and would stay up high until the engine cooled down, then when I started it it would be normal until I floored it again. When I shut it off, it would diesel. Varnish build up on the lower throttle plate. When it cooled down it would shut closed again. I cleaned it as described above and it never happened again.
Good luck!

Thanx, IanCT
I rebuilt the carb last year - it was unusually clean inside, nothing was worn or corroded or gummed up.
When I blip, with the engine cold, the RPMs will drop from 1.8 to about 1 - no problem - hate the fast idle - it is too fast !
I believe there are others with this same problem. I wonder if anyone has switched over to FI ??
More to come, I only drive this Accord several times per week now.
