can cluster bulbs be painted to match amber ITR cluster?
trying to save some money and was wonder if painting the cluster bulbs would give it an amber look, like those in the ITR. If this is possible which paint color or code do i use, and will it fade? if you know or have any suggestions please let me know, thanks.
just buy some amber 168 bulbs from your local auto parts store...
it took me a few tries to match the actual ITR, but i'm pretty darn close

Why not just buy a USDM or JDM gauge Cluster, there was even a thread on HT about how to mod the gauge cluster to the correct mileage as well.
I wouldn't bother with the Paint stuff cause eventually it will get HOT, crack and peel off in your gauge cluster.
I had a set of Euro Clear bumper lenses once which came with cheapy Amber bulbs, the paint on them bulbs flaked off in less than a year.
Another way you can Get the Amber color is to cut out some Amber Transparent film (like the kind you use to make your White stock color look Amber) wrap your stock 168 bulbs in it and use it that way.
if that was all you wanted was the color...
BTW, the underside of your gauges are colored blue, therefore, putting Amber bulbs will get you only "Close" to the real color. IMHO, save your $$$ buy a genuine Type R gauge cluster, I know, I've had like 5 of them
which I bought and sold for me and my friends. Real Type R gauges are Amber, hence they only come with clear bulbs not Amber. if you didn't already know.
***nothing beats the real deal***

Just do what I did, take the cluster out and change the 3 main lights that light up the cluster to amber. Goto any pepboys and you get can get amber, I did it so my cluster would be brighter and easier to read. The oem bulbs are dim and dull as hell. The 3 main light bulbs you would need are 194.

I tried blue and white along with red and amber, and my favorite was red. Right now, however, I have a light blue guage cluster now, and the numbers are bright, but the needles are kinda dim. I'm probably going to go back to red one of these days.
is the needle dim only because the lights that you change, are the ones that light up the needle? and is this for a gen3 cluster or gen2? or does it matter?
Anyone know what kind of bulbs will produce a very bright white color? Do Whit LED's work?
BTW I have amber, and have had it for about a year and im kinda tired of it. The thing that I do like about it however, is that the bulbs in my autometer gauges and the ones in my gauge cluster are the same, so I can match them whenever I change the bulbs. Sux I gotta buy like 6 bulbs thou. . .

you can also use the red light bulb covers from the autometer gauges . i used them on my spoon cluster and it matches my climate control

Realize that the ITR cluster not only has a different color but also has the fake CF and the numbers are shaped different.

You will never be able to match the color of the R cluster. The reason being is that the gauge faces are what determines the color that is illuminated, not the bulbs.

Yes, that will change the color to an orangish color, but like I said "You will never be able to match the color of the R cluster."
(see example posted by SMZ GSR.)
Which is why everybody and their mothers are changing the color of their clusters in the first place isn't it?

HAhaha did the same in my friends GSR too and it is almost identical
besides if they are tryin to get the "typeR" look then they must not want to spend the money on a real cluster .
