You can have it as dark as you want but the only windows you can't tint is the driver and passenger front windows

correct, the back windows can be as dark as you want them to be......hell, you could even paint them as long as you can see thru it. it is only illegal to tint the front side windows.

dunno, but they probably never got caught. but it is definitely illegal. but when you go down to the LA area you will see many cars with blacked out front windows.

i heard they give u a fine instead of a fix it now, tints just give cops more reasons to pull u over, imagine if u drank like 2 beers and a cop pulled u over for tints then end up givin u a DUI instead
My shop told me that it was illegal but it was up to me. I had them do it lighter in the front.
At that time, I thought the law was that as long as it was lighter than the rear, its legal. Now im not sure if its right or not.
I havent got pulled over for it (knock on wood), but then I dont drive like an idiot to make myself noticeble.
Oh, and ive had it for four years.

yes, that's correct...no exceptions in CA. no matter how light the tint is even. i tried to do my fronts but my local shop won't tint it because of the laws they said.....they don't want to be liable for it.

Just decide if staying cool is worth the risk of being pulled over for you. It might not be a good idea if you frequently get pulled over.

ok, no one seems to have this 100% correct so far, so ill clear this up.
front windshield - tint strip can go no more than 4" down from the top of the windshield.
2 front windows - 70% clear (that means a non colored, including black , charcoal, etc.... basically, the window would not appear to be tinted...)
you can get away with 50% charcoal, and maybe 35% (maybe)
all windows behind the front 2 - as dark as you want
