I have a 1990 accord and whenever i am stuck at a traffic light for more than a minute or so my car begins overheating...but as soon as i begin moving again the temp slowly climbs back down (as long as i am going above 30 mph...otherwise is stays hot). I've had problems with overheating before and have recently had the radiator replaced and a new thermostat added...i have no idea what the problem could be now...if you have any ideas please let me know so i can get this fixed.

 

i had the same problem with my old mustang...it was the fan... it needed a new control module of some sort... i dont know if hondas are the same (prolly not because honda is so superior ) but maybe ur engine is overheating cuz of something similar... all the wind from driving cools your engine down, and when your stop... no wind to cool it down and no fan to help either. so maybe?

 

Of course check all the usuals. Any coolant loss? Condenser and radiator fan relays, fuses, leaks, and radiator cap. You either have some kind of blockage or the fans aren't coming on. I would think that it would be more of a fan problem. Check coolant temperature switches A and B and make sure that thermostat is a Honda OEM part (makes a difference).

 

It is the fan(s). I had this happen on my 1990 Ford Tempo GLS, yes, thats right, a Tempo. Found On Roadside Dead (good ol' FORD). If you get some new fans, that should fix your problem and ta da! No more overheating. In the mean time, turn on the heater if you have to to help cool the engine temps if you arent already doing that. Good luck

1)Fuse(winner of Honda-tech.com "my accord overheating" problem 03'-04')

2)check if both fans will kick in

3)leaks(check for pin hole leak around those finger size coolant link to the tb's/heater core, check for collapsed lower rad. hose, etc)

4)oily milky radiator coolant

5)white sweet smelling smoke from your tailpipe

6)thermostat(only use OEM, autozone crap sucks)

7)pressure test radiator cap and cooling system(autozone rent out pressure gauge for free, test at least for five minute at 1.1 or 14 psi)

8)Timing(not very likely but it could be it if your belt jumped a tooth or two)

9)a/f ratio(ask any chevy guy and he can tell you about running lean and overheating in their small block =P )

As far as white smoke and oil in the coolent, It could happen but its not very likely in honda's as far as I know. Also I have a service manual for my 91 Acc and there is no fuse for the fans, its on a relay. But the fan timer unit is on a fuse but that unit is used to turn on the fans when the engine is turned off if its hot enough and keeps the fans going for 15 min. And accrding to the manual the electric of the timer and the fan relay are not connected together. There are also 2 coolant switches, they both control the fans when to turn on, the manual gives spec of the high temp(on) and the low temp(to shut off). On a hot day the fans should be running at idle! Good luck man!!
