DIY EF engine bay paint. Your neighbors will love you for this!

Washed, completely sanded, ready for masking and a final rub-down.

Masked, final wipe down done and ready for paint!

Painting. I had a few neighbors glaring at me. Oh well!

First coat

Second coat. This is primer if you cannot tell.
I left the tow hook on the driver side frame rail because the lower two bolts wouldn't come out. The nuts on the other side of the frame rail broke away from the spot weld or whatever and just spin freely =/
I'll probably do the color coat on sunday. It'll be Grand Prix White. I'm just trying to figure out if I should buy a smaller gun (touch up gun) to do the color coat....it was really hard getting the large gun in some of those areas even after adjusting the pattern down smaller. That and sanding in all those small areas is a real PITA.
Any advice for the color coat, sanding, clear etc?
dumbass, you painted the top shock bushings! WTF you get 0 cool points and wont win ANY shows...
but if you like it half assed- then i respect that and commend you on achieving your goal

WTF? Shutup p00n.
All the stock suspension is getting replaced. At least I took off all the nuts....I can't tell you how many engine bays I've seen here (even on 'show' cars) where they just painted over everything.

looks good........I noticed the shock towers too but just figured you were 1)replacing them anyway or 2)didn't care b/c we've all seen worse. Either way, good luck and is this your first time painting? Are you going to do the outside also? I was thinking of doing the same thing.

Wow...Spray gun and all huh? Well, I just used some high temp black paint in a rattle can on my engine bay (Did the whole bay when the motor was out)....no sanding, no prep, except for masking and removing of parts that i didnt want painted...

Turned out pretty cool...i used about 2 full cans and 1 more for touch up...let it dry in my garage but i of course painted out side. My neighbors didnt seem to mind too much. Next step...paint the damn car!

Yep, replacing it all anyway.
This is my very first time painting with a full-size spray gun. I've been painting with spray cans and touch up guns for years and doing body prep so I fully understand the procedure of proper sanding, cleaning etc, but I've never used a full size gun.
I didn't want to do the rattle-can engine bay thing...I like it color matched, and the sad thing is that two cans of color matched rattle can paint costs dang near as much as a quart from my local color house!!
On top of that, I already had EVERYTHING out to hide the wiring harness and other crap. There's no time like the present and I wouldn't have ever had the car this stripped again. Now or never!
I will be doing the whole car eventually, but there's a lot of body work that needs to be done first.
Total cost to me:
$100 for the gun.....but this is really just a one time investment.
~$80 or so total for the paint and supplies (primer, base, clear, thinner etc)
The best quote I got to paint it was $350....so I'm coming out pretty dang good.
They'll be enough paint left over that I'm going to go ahead and primer/paint the entire trunk area and maybe start on the door jambs.

Looks good, not like it matters since you arent a proffesional painter but 100 dollars sounds like a pretty cheap price for a paint gun, is it a gravity feed gun? My buddys a painter and spent close to 600 on his main gun and he said its not even up to par.
Im just asking how it worked for you, Ive got a nice air compressor in my garage and Id like to be able to do my own painting(mostly do rattle can jobs, turn out rpetty good htough) and was wondering how the cheaper gun is working for you?

Well, you can see in the pictures; it's an HVLP gun. Everybody that sees it unless they're 1 foot away believes it's a SATA. I guess it's an exact replica...a few friends who are relatively experienced said it sprays VERY well for $100.
I don't know how well it sprays personally....this is my first time ever using a gun! So I have nothing to compare it to. It lays paint well, though. The adjustment is great....I was able to get a pattern from about 1/2" all the way to a foot or so.
The exterior is going to be Grand Prix White, same with the engine bay. The project is on hold now though because school started.

Is that you or your bro in the pics??
(twins and ish!)
Looks good!
... BUT ...
why did you use primer instead of sealer?

The guy at my local color house suggested I use this particular primer and NOT a sealer with the basecoat/clearcoat I'm using.
I didn't question his knowledge and just bought it.

Very nice! I've pulled my engine already for a rebuild and I would love to do something like this while the engine is out. How long did it take for you to strip everything else out? (harness, lights, fenders etc.) and how long did it take to paint and the wait time between primer coats?
