Default Yet another swap / California smog question

So I've got some wrenching planned in another month to do an engine swap. It will be 100% smog legal, but my question is not about that.

My auto registration is due for renewal and I am supposed to get a smog check a few weeks after I am doing the swap.

The question is ... can I just go straight to the regular smog check with the engine swap, or do I need to see a state ref first?

Or should I go get my current engine smogged right now, then go see the state ref after the swap?

smog it now!!! you will need to get your swap ref'd to get your registration renewed. smog shops are not supposed to smog cars taht have been swapped. i went to 6 differnt smog shops and they wounldnt smog my car b/c it was swapped. btw, going to the ref is the same as getting a smog check as you can get a smog cert. from them.

Wait and go to the ref. If you get smogged without the swap, then get stopped with the swap, and have to pop hood, you'll be on your way to the ref anyway.

If you will have the swap in place ready to smog before the registration is due, then just have it ref'd.

The problem is that I'll be cutting it close .... I'll have like 2 weeks between my smog date and when I think I'll be done with the swap.

I'm a little worried about having time to work out any potential bugs in time.

Just pay the registration, and you can always get a temp registration sticker from the DMV until you pass the ref. The DMV wont send you the yearly registration sticker until you pass the smog test.

if u know you will pass smog with your swap, go striaght to state ref.
if your not sure, just go smog now, renewal your registration adnn wait 2 years till you need to smog again.

but if you want everything to be leagal, just go striaght to state ref. better than always going to get your car smogged, and wasting time and money.

Good point ... I wasn't sure if the state ref would count for the registration smog check as well.

How long does it usually take to get an appointment made with a state ref?
