Default Cracked exhaust manifold on 92 Si

Hey I am looking at purchasing a 92 civic HB Si with 170,000km on it. The problem I have is that it has a cracked exhaust manifold. Now my Dad says that this is due to overheating, now I am all worried that it is screwed. Is this a common problem with this motor? Any help would be great. Thanks

Could be from overheating but screw it... If the car is clean other than that buy it... Swap in a new motor and you'll be all set. I'm not sayin' go B series either just get another stocker (z6 or d15b). You could probably pick one up pretty cheap. My d15b was $325 and it runs like new!

My manifold cracked on my d16z6 and it was from overheating.

The real issue is why did it overheat, cooling problem, head gasket? You might need to replace the head gasket because overheating to the extent of cracking the exhaust manifold may have damaged the head gasket and if you're really unlucky I heard the head could be warped. In this case it usually can be milled straight or you can just get a new one. Of course you'll need a new header too.

Get a good deal on the car and all of these problems can be fixed if you even have them.

I think I am getting a pretty decent deal, I just hope that this is a common problem. I read that the 96 - 00 have a recall on them. Not sure if it's true or not. I just want to make sure that it will not need a new head gasket right away.

Could possibly be that your manifold gasket had a leak in it, thus creating uneven heat distribution. This would cause the manifold to warp/crack if excessive enough.

i just swapped my d16 out of my car for a b16 and my manifold was craked as well but the car ran fine. the guy who did my swap works for honda and says that that happens all the time and it was nothing to worry about. so id say go for it.

and aways remember...the replacement for displacement is VTEC

Well thanks to everyone who posted, it is making me feel more reassured about it.

I have a confession to make I have been hitting some off the other Honda sites and somebody suggested that I check the coolant system with one of those pressure gauges...great idea. The car is over an hour away from me all highway. So when the guy calls me back I will ask him about it and go out and test the car.

Much more calming.
So worried about this, I don't want to get a lemon for my GF, this car is supposed to replace her failing car not give her more headaches.

that is rare that the maniifold will crack do to over heating, if it got that hot in the first place, he would have blow a head gasket, or worped the head or block, it happend when the eng is hot, (180) Narmal. and water gets on the manifold, if alot of water gets on it , it will cause it to crack, so the best thing to do is check if the eng has any blow by, start the eng, and take off the oil cap, (if any smoke comes out of the oil cap) the rings are gone and it's a bad eng. if not then it's good. and check the oil for water, and that water for oil. to see if it has a blowen head gasket, and of corse take it for a spin, and make sure it don't have any waired lag. or any loud knocking, also if you hear some small taping coming from the head , that's ok it's when it lound it's bad, anything loud is bad lol good luck

Yah unfortunatly I have no idea off the history of the car, The guy selling it did'nt even drive it he just parked it for a few months then bought a BMW, talking to him it sounds like he has a ton of money.
