R exhuast much louder inside than outside?
Both stock and Mugen Twinloop sound really loud inside the cabin. Following my girl home in my truck the other day, and I was surprised how really quiet it was from the outside. So I had her drive it a bunch in VTEC, and monitored from all sides, and even standing on the roadside while she went past. Damn, narry a peep! Inside it's ricer L-O-U-D
Is everyone's like this? Seems like kind of a waste to save 25lbs of (rear) sound deadening material.
Could there be something wrong, like maybe mis-fit exhuast, missing body plugs, or something causing harmonics?

Maybe when your in the car its not the exhaust you are hearing that is "ricer L-O-U-D" It is a possiblity that the noise is coming primarily from the engine bay not the exhaust.
If you want a loud exhaust both inside and out buy an N-1.

Well, it's like yelling inside a bucket.. it's much quiter when someone yells @you from across the street +the R has no sound deadening to cancel out the sounds(frequencies).
Do this drive.... the R w/the windows up.. then open them.
much much quiter when you open them.
I believe it has to do w/resonance. By cracking the window it changes the systems (ie the shells) natural resonant(sp?) frequency, or it's tendency to vibrate.
In "layman's" terms.. "the **** echoes

I don't like that attidude mister!... j00 sure j00'r a Type R owner

What?
Stock, loud on the inside? I'm terribly confused (not trying to flame).
LOUD on the inside is Fujitsubo RM-01A. It resonates terribly in the cabin due to that big *** resonator under the center of the car. Any other more free-flowing exhaust will also be loud in the car due to no sound deadening.
But twinloop and stock? My stock ex is silent in/out of the car - a little raspy in vtec - but nothing anyone would really pay attention to.
Do you have a test pipe or a hollowed out cat or something? That would contribute mightily to more noise - but if you have a cat - maybe you have a bad resonator or something - my experience is most ITRs with stock/twinloop are QUIET inside, very quiet (besides engine/tranny/road noise).
Chris - who wonders what type of intake you have for starters....

Yeah, I think it's loud too. I've owned another R with a DC cat-back and a '97 Prelude with an N1 and can say that the stock ITR exhaust is noisy. The aftermarket ones were much louder though.
I love the way the stock exhaust sounds.

Stock intake, arm, filter, but the resonator is missing, so that needs to go back in (finally found one used for a good price and just recieved it). I doubt that would make that much difference, but maybe - we'll see this weekend. Aftermarket hi-flow cat (Carsound 2.5 now, Catco 2.5 w/2.25 flanging on stock ex), and I'm thinking that's where the noise is coming from. It's really 'booming' and loud 3-4.5k (1/2 - 2/3+ throttle), then it's quieter 5-6k, and not much noisier once it hit's VTEC (besides the lovely VTEC howl
). Road noise definitely is there, but the exhuast overpowers it. I can't even hear the motor or the tranny at all, it's that bad.
Windows open is quieter, but not that much. Quieter also with the rear seats up vs down, and with the package shelf in. Nothing appears loose, and I don't believe I have any exhaust leaks (checked multiple times, just need to do a soap and water test of all the joints next). All the weather strip is good, and the doors, hatch, etc fit tight. It is JDM nosed.
Could be the front O2 going, as mileage is down a bit. I'm thinking running rich at part throttle could be the culprit. I will check the ECU also, maybe it's chipped. Timing was checked, but my mechanic is slipping these days, so who knows. There are all new exhaust gaskets throughout, all the bolts are torqued to spec, and all have been re-checked. Compression is as new, valves were recently adjusted, oil is always checked, and all maintenance is done. Needs new cap, rotor and plugs tho (going in this weekend). But it's been this way for 20K mi.
There is definitely something wrong, as stock was never 'silent'. Not even close. Not just sensitive ears. Yes, I love the R sounds & feels. No, I don't have pu$$y hair
This thing is driven hard and in VTEC by both of us every single day, as my girl and I live way out in the twisties.
The Twinloop in there did come used, and does have some scapes on the bottom of the res. But I checked it thoroughly, and there were no dents, rattles, or any evidence of being opened up or having any holes. The stock ex came from Black_R with 25K on it, and looked to be in excellent shape (no grinds).
I was thinking maybe the ex. mounting rubbers had hardened, so more resonance was being transmitted to the shell. The car came with Mugen side and rear lips, maybe that traps the sound underneath (but that's a LONG shot). WTF. There's just something wrong, and I'd like to make it right, know what I mean?
