the GSR i just bought for dirt cheap (a bit over $1G), needs synchros, but it's probably just cheaper and better to get a new gearbox. i'm guessing that there are multiple transmissions that will bolt up to my motor, but which ones? also, how is the gearing different amongst my options? will i need to get different axles?
just trying to figure out options before i go looking in junkyards.

You can get yourself any hydraulic B-series transmission. Integra LS/RS/GS, another GS-R, Type R, Civic Si.
You won't need different axles for any of those transmission to work. And you'd probably want to stick with the shorter gearing, so, GS-R, Type R, or Civic Si would be my choices.
BSeries.net has all transmission specs

The FD will be different, and mostly 4th and 5th gears are diff. With the exception of the ITR gearing, which I'm not sure about. Just check out that site, it'll give you all those specs.
get yourself a B16 hydro tranny and replace the gears 3-5 with the ATS gear set. Also throw in the JDM final drive.
If you are into autoX or HPDE, hell or just like to drive the hell out of your car. The ATS gear set will make your car feel like a real race car.
However, dont expect awesome gas milage out of it.

i already have a race car. if i can get a little shorter gearing for the same or less money, then that's great. while this car may end up as a race car in a few years, i don't want to spend a bunch of money on it where class rules will just make me take it back off.
the car is just used for daily purposes, so i don't have to drive the big boehemuth truck around and go through $40 in fuel per week. so REALLY short gearing is a no no.
basically i'm buying this car for $1750 minus the cost of fixing the gearbox. and he's a close friend, so i don'w want to screw him over.
