Can't separate engine from transmission to get it out-> Installing new tranny, flywheel, clutch
Car: 92 Integra
Problem: Cannot separate engine from transmission. I have the transmission on one moveable jack, and the engine is supported from underneath with a hydraulic bottle jack.
I followed the Helm's manual and cannot for the life of me separate the transmission from the engine. I've tried hitting the transmission away from the engine from underneath with a hammer. I've gotten the firewall-side gap pretty well started by using a large pry bar and now have about a quarter inch gap between the engine and transmission. The side where the front motor mount is has absolutely no gap and does not appear to be moving. Is there any trick to get the transmission to let go?
I suspect the dowel pins are a bit seized up or just cocked on there funny due to the tight clearances. Any one have similar problems, or can anyone offer a solution? I spent 3 hrs just trying to separate the two.

Also make sure you removed the tranny brace, and all the bolts holding the dust cover on and whatnot.

Double that. Check, check and re-check. One of these is most likely your problem.

Starter is out, the flywheel cover is out. Followed the Helm's to a 'T'.
Any other advice? I really can't see anything holding the two together, and am probably going to resort to buying an engine hoist tonight so that I can really yank on it without worrying that the engine will fall off the jack.

There has to be something you did not take off.
It's hard to believe that the dowel pins will seize up that much to not allow you to separate the tranny from the block.

They can hold together pretty tight. I use a prybar or two to get them apart.

If you guys read the post, then you'd know that he said he used a prybar and that he still can't get it off.
Geez ...

it sounds exactly like what will happen if the flywheel dust cover is still in place, which I do know you said was removed. Im personally hesitant about getting out the BFH unless it is absolutely needed...which it may be in this case if everything really is off like it needs to be...

If you read his post you'll see he didn't want to pry very hard.

Try to lift the tranny and the engine at different angles, and wiggle the tranny as much as you can.
how about the halfshaft?..before you do anymore prying with crowbars make sure everything that needs to be removed is removed..good luck

I don't know what kind of cars you guys work on, but I've worked on older Hondas and they still don't take that much work to separate the tranny from the block.

If it is ever a pain I just pry it off a bit and grab that tranny and shake the crap out of it. I've never had too much of a problem pulling one out and putting it back in. Then again I'm not a small guy.

Thanks for all the help. My dad is helping me out a bit and bought an engine hoist yesterday. I'm going to hoist the engine instead of using a bottle jack underneath to support the weight with just the one engine mount connected.
I'll hopefully be able to yank on it some more, without worrying about the engine properly being supported. It's hard to get a BFH to hit the tranny on the the radiator side because that's the side that doesn't seem to want to move.
I'll try giving it all different angles because I think it may just be getting caught up on a combination of the dowels and mainshaft. Thanks for the help... I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Looks like I forgot the bolt that attaches the back up light bracket to the transmission. A 17mm bolt was the reason it wouldn't come apart. After that it was cake.
Anyone have any suggestions for getting the dowel pins out. The new transmission I am installing did not come with dowel pins, and one is stuck in the old tranmission, and one is stuck on the engine side.
Any help is much appreciated.

it is better to buy some new one about a 1 a piece, or spray so wd-40 to get the dowel loose in the tranny, then try using some plier, becareful to not bend them up

Dumbass, you said they were all out.

I've taken the engine and transmission apart before... it's just a blonde moment.
