Default Vehicle Speed Sensor??? Help Please!

I have an 89 civic hatch w/a sohc zc swap. I have a crx si gauge cluster and my speedometer quit working a couple of days ago and my check engine light came on. My ecu is blinking code 17 which is the vehicle speed sensor. Which would make sense but I don't know where it is and what I need to do to fix it. Any info would be great.

The VSS is mounted to the gauge cluster on the back of the speedo.
The tranny has a gear for the cable drive in it.
The cable drive routes to the back of the speedo/VSS.

Check to make sure the cable drive is secure in the gear drive in the tranny.
The come out often if they were uninstalled for some reason and the metal retaining clip was not installed correctly.
The cable drive would be the next culprit as they sometimes break internally.

HTH!

Thanks for the info. I was able to get under my car today and pulled the speedo cable out of the tranny. The cable had snapped about 6 inches above it's connection w/the transmission. I think that would probably be the problem.

while we're on this topic - i recently installed a B18 in my car with the tranny speed sensor that sends an electric signal to the guage cluster. however, i have retained the stock guage cluster which is equipped with the mechanical speedo cable.

has anyone dealt with this interface before? should i be getting the mechanical speedo gear out of my D16 for use in the B18, or should i try and get an aftermarket speed guage that can handle an electric speed signal?

thanks

Use your cable speedo with your stock cluster. D-series and b-series are the same. Also since you won't be needing your electronic speedo I'll take it I need one for my 95 Integra GSR cluster in my 88 CRX std!!!!

actually - what happened was that the lip broke off the Dseries speedo gear on my old engine , so its technically stuck in there. i need to make a trip to a junkyard to get a new one (haha - well not new... just ANOTHER one

send me an email at wcs141@psu.edu about the B18 speedo gear. we'll talk business
