they made it till 4 minutes from the end; vibrations suddenly so bad i had to slow and after one more lap pull in; was in excellent position at that time and Probenstien and I were really "burning up the track"; errrrrrr; maybe it was burning us up
complete weekend report to follow soon (maybe tonight if i get time).

after sat's race, the front bfg r1s were destroyed; well, at least the driver side front was totally wrecked, the passenger side front was very very lightly patchy. the rears were rears cause they could no longer be fronts due to previous race action. that left my "school" or "practice" tires; Dunlop SP5000s. after practice in the morning on sun, it was evident that i could still be competitive with the other cars; hence the "why".
it should be noted that those particular SP5000s had already had numerous numerous track weekends on them (i run them usually during non race track events and lots of times during practice and setup during a race weekend before switching off to my real racetires). never ever had a problem before with 'em in years of use. seems this particular combination of extreme extreme heat and beating down sun created a super overheated condition which broke them from the inside out. the tread on them is still great; no chunking; i'd say at least 3-4/32s left. they are just bulging like *****; i think the belts inside busted up or some other structural failure happened. they still hold air perfect, but the vibrations were terrible when it happened and it was obvious that i had to retire. it fleetingly crossed my mind to try to limp around, but i certainly didn't want to be a "white flag vehicle" out there and mess up someone's race or my car or have to pull off somewhere and cause a tow truck to come out with the subsequent delay; so i retired when i felt the vibration.

ok; i can offer this: they seem to wear like iron. this particular set had about 20k street miles and i can't count how many track days. at least 20+ days at the track. and i can't really claim to be "easy" on tires
before tracking them extensively, i considered that the wet traction, when street driven, was excellent. after the many weekends of heatcycles, the wet traction really went away. i did a really wet weekend with them last year up at Watkins Glen teaching with the PCA, and they felt a little slick. i think that they gave up some grip after all those heat cycles.
that said, i really like them. nice all around tire; remember the SP5000 is a "performance oriented all season tire". it offers nice dry traction, good wet traction, and some winter capability. its not a Falken Azenia, or a AVS Intermediate, or a SP8000, or a Toyo T1S. its a compromise tire.
but i put alot of those 325is BMWs and a SER or two behind me in sunday's race with them on all four corners

ps here is a link to a really good description of them:

hope this helps you make a good decision!

thanks for the write up , i wonder if they even make the AVS intermediate anymore. I was very happy with what they offer, dont get me wrong i love my stock advans A046 but 200.00 each
and for less then 20k miles out of them . so an alternative tire with the same charateristic is a must.
