Default Installing timing belt

I was wondering how difficult it was to install a new timing belt. I have a Haynes Accord manual, which it details how to do it. I was just wondering from anyone's standpoint how difficult would it be for a beginner to do. That would save me A LOT of money, obviously, by doing it myself.

Getting the crankshaft pulley off is rough... Got a GOOD air impact? The bolt is right-handed (normal) but its really tight. There's also a pulley-holder tool that fits into the big hex recess in the pulley.

Other that that it's easy. But PLEASE read thru the section about how to line up the timing marks on your crank & camshaft pulleys. Don't do this job unless you're sure you understand that part. I bet some screwed-up jobs come from that. Before you take the old belt off, LOOK at the marks & make sure you understand them.

You'll need a timing light to set your spark timing when you're done. Feeler gauges if you want to check/adjust your valve lash (you probably should).

The only place you really need an air wrench is for the crank pulley bolt. Lotsa people use something to hold the crank while they use a breaker bar (& a pipe). I've gone to a corner garage, had them break it loose, put it back on with a ratchet wrench, drive home...

I don't know how good are the pictures in the Haynes book, but...<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by JimBlake &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Before you take the old belt off, LOOK at the marks & make sure you understand them.</TD></TR></TABLE>

JimBlake has given you some good info. But I do have to say that this topic has been covered quite a few times. There have been some recent ones as well. Run a search on timing belt in the recent and archive and you should come up with a lot of info. In those threads you'll see problems that people have had and what they tried to fix the problems. As you'll read, like JimBlake said, the crank pulley bolt is the toughest part of the job. After that just follow the step outlined in your manual and you should be good. I've never looked at a Haynes book for the Accord but other Haynes books didn't seem to be as detailed as the Helms book. The Helms book is more expensive but well worth it IMO.

I'm not saying you didn't search. Don't know if you read this one but check it out. This guy has been having all sorts of trouble trying to get his off. Maybe you should mark it and check back to see what he ended up doing to get it off.
There have been all sorts of sugestions posted in this one.
