paint bumpers !
I painted my bumper. I snaded it lightly with... uhm... 200 grit paper. I didn't primer it. It has been there through the snow and rain for about a year now. I wasn't going for looks and it shows. I am not sure how to post pics here yet. I could send them by email if you want.
I recently added a lip and was persuaded to paint the bumper back to black. I was offered the advise to sand the bumper with 800 under running water and dry. then several coats of special flat black. "Special" being from a quality automotive paint store that sells
paint.
paint.
if you sand the bumper with a 200 grit then paint over it, you'll have a LOT of scratch marks. since it seems like you have a small budget, i'd do this:
scuff up the paint w/ a 400 grit. clean that up, hit the bumper with bulldog adhesion promotor (makes things stick well to plastic), take a sandable primer, and spray a few coats of it. take a 400 grit and wetsand the primer (repeat the primer/wetsand process once again if you'd like). sand it as smooth as you can, then spray the paint. it'll come out a lot nicer than if you just sanded w/ a 200 grit and painted over it.

you need to get off your *** go down to a store that specializes in automotive products. Easier and faster...

I picked up some supplies yesterday. I got some stuff espescially for repainting bumpers that comes in a variety of shades. Guy said 2 cans should complete one bumper. Each can 8.99. He also said I should get the paint adhesion promoter and a surface degreaser/stripper. Bulldog was the name of the promoter and I passed on the degreaser/stripper. A buddy of mine works at a paint place and he said he would bring some better grade stuff. Each can of promoter was 10.99.
If it helps, he also said to come in with 400 and follow up with 800 grit. Paint coats should be about 5-6, depending on results wanted and starting color. (how bad the bumper color is to begin with)

yea, bulldog adhesion promotor works great but i don't know about each can being $11...where are you buying all of this stuff? if your buddy works at a paint place, i'd imagine you to get a discount? either way...5-6 coats, IMO, is overkill. i've heard that TOO many coats of a base/clear will be heavy and be MORE prone to cracking/chipping. i'm not sure if that goes for spray-can paint, but i'd imagine it would be the same thing.
