Default HX VTEC problems help

I have done a search and came up with nothing. I have a 98' HX Civic VTEC-E w/62k miles, 5spd. completely stock. The problem is the VTEC engagement is erratic. I know the VTEC is suppose to kick in around 2500-3200 rpms. When cruising down the highway at about 70-80 mph, rpms at about 2900-3100, the VTEC shuts down causing the car to loose power. When I accelerate to about 85 mph the VTEC kicks in and I have good throttle response as long as I keep the rpms over 3200 the second I let off the gas just a little it feels like I just let off the gas completely when I push on the gas to regain speed I have no response until I get above 3200 rpms. Does any one know how to make it so the VTEC will engage at 2500 rpms and stay engaged ? The ECU is not throwing any codes so everythng checks out ok there. I don't plan on hyping this motor up because I know it is a POS and if it didn't have only 62k miles on it I would throw it out now. Flame suit on!!! Fire away

Actually, your VTEC is working properly. When VTEC-E engages, it basically sends the drivetrain into 12 valve operation (not completely, but for our purposes that's what we'll say). When this happens it also goes into lean-burn mode. This is the loss in power that you are experiencing, and that means it's working like it's supposed to (and saving you gas). Why own an HX if your not going to take advantage of this amazing technology? It's not a POS, it's doing exactly what it's supposed to.

Exactly. It is made to improve your fuel economy and get serious MPG out of your tank. BTW, why are you driving at 85mph just to be in VTEC range?

Yeah, agreed... You RARELY feel the VTEC kick in when you're in an HX. I can sometimes feel it in first or second gear, but the crossover is rarely felt in the higher gears. The only thing I CAN notice usually is the power loss. It's no big change in sound or anything. Your car is working absolutely fine.

Oh... and 85 is about 3500 RPMs in 5th gear. That's why he's driving 85 to be in VTEC range.

Thanks for the input. I know the HX is made for fuel economy. I get 45 mpg at 85 mph all day. The only reason I asked for setting the engagement of the VTEC is I can really feel it kick in and out, it's to the point I cannot keep a constant speed between 70-80 mph when going down the highway, that's why I drive it at 85 mph. I guess if this is normal for the car than I'll have to deal with it until the motor blows. When I bought this car I had no idea what the HX stood for now I know...Hesitation Xtreem. Thanks again guys.
