Where to mount my autometer gauges?
So I have the three essential gauges currenlty installed in a automoter bezel and the third I was going to install where my cruize control button used to be. But here is the problem. You can not see them through the whell very easily in race conditions, without putting your head down. This is not good on the track!
Where to most people mount the gauges so they an see them easily on the straights, etc?
Any pics and opinions are appreciated!

I could mount mine similarly, but I think they are too low. I was thinking about goign to home depot and buying some sheet metal and just creating an L bracket, drill the holes and install the gauges in this. I would then screw the L bracket into the dash near the clock. Any opinions?
Dood, what good is that extinguisher down so low. It needs to be on the far tube, up high so you get maximum props, and where you can't reach it, but so what, as long as you look good...
<sigh> when will people learn it's all about looks.
BTW, is that the soft roll bar foam? You really need to replace it with the SNELL-rated stuff. What you have there will still let an unhelmeted head pop like a melon...

I'll take care of the extinguisher ASAP as soon as I get it back from being chromed. As for the padding, 90% of it is still the soft stuff but I have since replaced the halo padding with the SFI stuff (old pic, but they best I had of the gauge setup).

I mounted mine on an Autometer plate that was almost the perfect size to fit in where the heater controls "used" to be.
I can send you a pic if you want.
And seriously Travis - you have GOT to do something about that fire extinguisher. Just use little self-tapping sheet metal screws to attach it to the a-pillar at eye level.

Hand helds are worthless.
Answer the following question.
Who will sit in a car to fight a fire?

Depending on the gauge that you are trying to read...why not mount the gauges elsewhere, and put a series of warning lights in front of you, and label those accordingly.
Take for instance, oil pressure. While you don't always have to be staring at the gauge, you can set a warning light to come on say, at 15 psi of pressure. That way, when the light comes on, hurry and look at the guage, then assess the situation.
Just food for thought. That way you dont have to have so much stuff in your viewing area.

Answer the following question:
How many race cars have you seen catch on fire in the driver's compartment?
Apparently you have never seen a driver pull his car off the track, jump out with his handheld and put out an engine fire long before the corner workers get there with their HANDHELDS.
Those little handhelds are VERY effective for knocking down smaller engine fires.
Further - they are in the car because NASA and SCCA REQUIRE them at a minimum.

Answer: No one.
Question: Then where IS the extinguisher, mounted to the roof?
First of all, my post was humor <waves hand passing over top of head...>
Okay, lets be serious then:
Right, you get out of the car and assuming you can, you put the fire out. If it's a really bad fire, it doesn't matter if you had an extinguisher or not. In otherwords it didn't hurt to have it anyway.
What if you pull off where there's no course worker near by. Best to wait and watch it burn?
Isn't it better to have one then not? Having an extinguisher near by not a bad thing.

Did I say it didn't happen?
No.
My implication is that the majority of fires occur outside the driver's compartment.

Geting this topic back on topic please... How about mounting a L bracket on the dash above the center vents?
Also where do people put their oil temp sender?
Thanks!

No, actually OVER the clock/vents up on top of the dash is my plan. I picked up a generic plastic three-gauge pod that is a top-dash mount and I'm just going to trim the corners a little to get it to fit on the flat part of the dash in the middle...nice and high.

must you remind me? actually that wasn't an actual fire, that was me shooting it to prevent the fluid from lighting up after I tried to stop the car from 115mph with the e brake because of a brake failure.
ironically, that was the last race before the car was stolen, and the moron thieves stole the used/empty fire extinguisher! It's probably on somebody's A pillar as we speak...
