Default Cable Tranny B16 101. Need help post your expierience.

Ok this is for people with Y1, S1, J1, YS1 cable B series trannies. I have searched but havent found what i am looking for. Theres a lot of talk about not being able to swap certain diffs, synchros, etc I am im interested in peoples expierience an knowledge.

I have an S1 tranny an wanted LSD so I found a Y1 tranny an took an LSD out of it an swapped it into my tranny. Some people said you cant do it, some people said yes you can, well its in my car an its running so I assume im ok for now. A friend of mine with a Y1 blew his stock diff out an i gave him my S1 open diff, and his is still running to this day. I want to know if anyone has done this also, tried different diffs etc.

Are synchros swappable? I have heard yes an no. I am NOT a transmission guy AT ALL so any info on the difference between trannys, thoeys etc are welcome. thanks

what i know is this, The YS1 is the shortest geared, ITR LSD fits into it, an you can supposedly use hydro synchros from other B series trannyies for it.
S1 same gearing as a 96 type-R, rarely has LSD
J1 second shortest geared trans
Y1 longest geared B16 tranny most often of the trans that come with LSD

S1/J1 have the same gearing, neither ever had LSD.

ok so they have the same gearing an never had LSD. Now, i assume that means the Y1 has a different FD or/and different gearing correct? should a differential out of a Y1 LSD be able to fit into an S1 tranny?

As far as I know, both have a 4.4 final drive, just different gearing. I have no experience with Y1's so I couldn't tell you what interchanges.

Anyone?

Default It's been covered before by eggman -- do search

>I want to know if anyone has done this also, tried different diffs etc.

yeah the diffs are swappable -- you may have to grind the casing.
but whatever ring gear (Final Drive) on the diff you use,
must mate to your countershaft (small spline or big spline)

>Are synchros swappable? I have heard yes an no. I am NOT a transmission guy >AT ALL so any info on the difference between trannys, thoeys etc are welcome. >thanks

Search. I found it. small spline synchros are d-series synchros
reportedly. big spline synchros, are all same as hydro b-series.
the ITR synchros are not special

on an older small spline cable tranny, you can convert it all over to
hydro internals (ITR LSD blah blah blah) -- EXCEPT for the mainshaft.
That's where all the "problems" are. 3-4-5 are on the mainshaft.
Grind grind grind -- need JDM gears... you can buy the synch
sleeve, synch, etc etc USDM spec -- but the actual gear which gets
damaged you can't. And the tall small spline 5th gear is no longer
available *whine*

If someone REALLY got into it and figured this stuff out, it
could be possible to put a hydro mainshaft into an older case?
i dunno if that's possible. dunno if the bearing mounting points
are the same.

you'll have to wait until i get my S1 tranny out. and do a side-by-side
with my YS1.

When I did the ls 5th gearset swap I had basically the main and counter shaft from a ls tranny as my parts to pick from. When we put the ls 5th gearset on we snagged one of the J1 5th gear snycros....I thought I was screwed till the ls one fit just fine.....still workin strong, and loves the hwy...no grinds, just don't try to do a mad fast 5th-4th downshift and you'll be ok.

So since that probably was the most confused reply in English ever typed I found out that the j1 and the ls cable tranny may have more than just the 5th gearset syncros to interchange.

Yeah keep us posted. I have swapped diffs from a LSD y1 into my S1 an i have had NO problems out of it what soever, YET, its only been 1000 miles. I have pics of comparisons i took so ill post them up soon. As far as the D series synchor being the smaller ones, i have heaard that but not SEEN nor talked to people that have actually done it. thats what this thread is for, id like to see peoples actual expieriences involving the Cable trannies. Theres ALOT of bad, misleading info out there. thanks keep em coming guys
