Default Universal Ball Joints

Yesterday I drove about 400 miles. About 120 miles into my trip I started to notice my car making a sound from turning. Oddly the car no longer does this.
Today my Dad and I took off both of the front wheels. In the upper arm assembly there is a ball joint boot. From this boot oil leaked onto the stabilizer bar. Obviously this needs to be replaced.

Honda can't order the part until Monday for me, I missed their 2 o'clock deadline for ordering parts I guess. Kragen and Monument told me all they carry for the car are the universal ball joints and also some tie rod joints that can also sometimes be used on Hondas. Using the 2nd one sounds sketchy.

So, I guess my question would be this. How is it to use the universal ball joints? Also, does anybody have a clue why my car is no longer making the sound today? My friend and I both noticed so I know I am not completely insane.

What are the life of the ball joint once it starts to leak? About 3+K miles ago when I did brake pads I did not notice that the stabilizer bar had oil on it from the ball joint boot. I sure am glad it did not seperate/detach on me!
